Acts of the Assassins by Richard Beard

Lovereading view...

Sequel to Lazarus is Dead but it easily stands alone. It is a wonderful piece of speculative fiction, a ‘what if’ story. Here it asks ‘what if the Roman Empire existed today and Jesus lived now?’ And more than that: was the resurrection faked? Where is the body? Did someone switch places with Jesus and die in his place so he could appear to ‘rise again’? Cassius Gallio is the investigator trying to solve these mysteries. Then years later, washed out and brought back he tries to solve the deaths of the Apostles, each more gruesome than the last. It starts like a mystery/thriller but manages to be so much more. A seriously strange read, not for everybody, it forces us to open our minds and suspend disbelief to follow a story well-known to many but told here in a totally new way. If you can make the leap of faith necessary to take this book simply as it comes, it is really something special. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

Reviews

'Brilliantly original and absurdly compelling ... it's a book you'll read in one, frantic gasp' Guardian

'Richard Beard is one of those rare writers whose novels are at once radically inventive and brilliantly entertaining. Acts of the Assassins ... is as joyously original as it is a page-turner to read' Tom Holland Daily Mail
