This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash

Lovereading view...

Winner of the Specsavers CWA Goldsboro Gold Dagger - Crime Novel of the Year 2014. Powerfully penetrating and intelligently observed, this intense thriller captures, holds and provokes your interest. The story is told by three people who become entangled in one man’s dreams to move away from his past and this is ultimately their tale rather than his. The author keeps the plot a little fractured to start and you feel as though you are deliberately kept in the dark. The names of the three main characters above the chapter headings when the narrative changes is necessary, as the tale doesn’t regularly rotate between each one. As the separate tales entwine, they begin to twist and writhe together and a creeping sense of foreboding and tension prowls across the pages. The anxiety, fear and torment of the characters can be clearly felt, and the welcome sliver of hope slicing through the darkness makes this a distinctive and stimulating read. ~ Liz Robinson

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. With A Land More Kind than Home, Wiley Cash, a native of western North Carolina, produced a debut of raw and uncompromising power, written in a totally persuasive argot. This book is every bit as accomplished (not always the case with follow-ups). It sports the same felicitous use of locale (conjured once again with immense skill) and, at the centre, a totally gripping crime narrative.

Synopsis

This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash

Easter Quillby: Wade disappeared on us when I was six, and I never saw him again until I turned twelve, after Mom was buried. She always said he was a loser, even if he was our dad, but it turns out he was much more than that. He was also a thief. Like he was on the day he stole me and my little sister. Bobby Pruitt: Wade took everything. My career. My health. My freedom. He screwed me and then he put me in jail. But now I'm out and I've got a new reason to find him. Because Wade made a big mistake, and now someone wants him dead. And that's where I come in...
