The Playground by Julia Kelly

Lovereading view...

A thoughtful novel that may be depressing for some but well worth a read. Set in Ireland the reader is ‘dropped’ into Eve’s life, nothing is clear to start with, then slowly you meet people as Eve does, slowly you learn about her, her back story, her new friends, her attempt to enter the community. The novel grows on you as the playground, central to the tale and at the centre of an estate, is restored. We have a mixed bunch of mums and kids, one an ADHD child, and there hangs our drama and eventual tragedy. ~ Sarah Broadurst

Synopsis

The Playground by Julia Kelly

Eve is starting again. Newly single, unemployed and with a baby daughter, she joins the local mums trying to make their nearby playground the heart of the community. But not all games are innocent - and not all friends are true. When the rules change, Eve must forge her own independence - and realise that the playground is no place to hide from adulthood.

Reviews

'Searingly honest, uncomfortably so ... Anatomises the aftermath of a breakup and the ensuing struggles with scalpel-like prose ... emotional resonance and achingly human observations'
Sunday Independent

'Dazzling ... It's a funny, sometimes heartbreaking insight into how a young mother struggles to cope ... Absolutely captivating'
Irish Independent
