The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris

Lovereading view...

As the title suggests, this is a retelling of the Norse myths from the point of view of Loki, the Trickster God. He is a figure often thought of as ‘evil’ though I have never believed this. Tricksters are a vital part of mythology, for example in the traditions of Alaskan Native American tribes, it was the Trickster, in their case a raven, who created the world. So it is nice to see Loki take his rightful place. This is a wonderfully easy read with a flowing storyteller’s style and a charmingly mischievous voice, using modern colloquialisms freely. It is episodic, like a set of short stories by the same narrator, making it simple to read a few chapters here and there without losing the thread. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

Synopsis

The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris

The novel is a brilliant first-person narrative of the rise and fall of the Norse gods - retold from the point of view of the world's ultimate trickster, Loki. It tells the story of Loki's recruitment from the underworld of Chaos, his many exploits on behalf of his one-eyed master, Odin, through to his eventual betrayal of the gods and the fall of Asgard itself. Using her life-long passion for the Norse myths, Joanne Harris has created a vibrant and powerful fantasy novel.
