Have your hankies at the ready, I almost cried twice in the first chapter. Richard Whiteley's partner takes us through the life of Britain's favourite gameshow host. With a foreword from his 'on-screen wife', Carol Vorderman. A fascinating and heartwarming insight into Richard Whiteley's life.

Richard by Kathryn by Kathryn Apanowicz

When Richard Whiteley died on 26 June 2005, he was mourned by a nation. As one of Britainâs best-loved TV presenters and host of Countdown from its launch to his death, he had been the face of teatime television. But the wordplay, wit and the playful façade hid a tenacious political journalist who had interviewed every Prime Minister from Harold Macmillan to Tony Blair.

Kathryn Apanowicz went on her first date with Richard Whiteley when she was seventeen, and they had an on-off relationship over the ensuing years, finally living together for eight years until his death. From studying at Cambridge; working at ITN in London in the 60s; the tragedy in his life of the successive deaths of his sister, mother and niece; the satisfaction with which he received his OBE; his time as a political reporter and journalist; his pride in Countdown, which had a uniquely wide audience from students to pensioners, and often filled the top five slots in the channelâs ratings; to his unfailing charity work, Richardâs private life was a complex and frequently difficult affair, and in this affectionate yet frank biography, the woman who knew him best uncovers the life of a man who was as enigmatic as he was approachable.

Richard by Kathryn reveals the Richard Whiteley we all know and love, but also the charismatic man behind the television presenter – the successes, the tragedies and the laughter. For the first time Kathryn Apanowicz shows us the real Richard, a man who everyone thought they knew but only a few ever really did.
