First Impressions by Charlie Lovett

Lovereading view...

A dual-time tale, one tracing the relationship of Jane Austen with a fictional character, Richard Mansfield, who may have influenced her work, and the other with present-day Sophie who may have proof of that influence, but others want that proof, so a modern day mystery and a fascinating literary relationship build to a lovely climax. Book lovers will appreciate it as well as fans of classy mysteries for it’s nicely written and a joy to read. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. A literary romp set in present-day Oxford and London, and in Hampshire in the late 1700s when the young Jane Austen befriended an elderly clergyman. The story of how the Reverend Richard Mansfield influenced and supported Jane’s early writing is discovered by Sophie Collingwood, a bibliophile with a family secret that comes to light after the death of an uncle. As Sophie and her ardent suitor try to fathom the links between Rev. Mansfield’s obscure book of allegorical stories and Austen’s famous novel, events take a dangerous turn, and there is more at stake than a literary reputation.

Synopsis

First Impressions by Charlie Lovett

Book lover and Jane Austen enthusiast Sophie Collingwood has barely started her new job at an antiquarian bookshop in London when two different customers request a copy of the same obscure publication: the second edition of Little Book of Allegories by Richard Mansfield. Their enquiry draws Sophie into a web of mystery surrounding the true authorship of Pride and Prejudice, with ultimately dangerous consequences. In a narrative that alternates between Sophie's quest, which also sees her dealing with several love interests on the way, and the young Jane Austen's touching friendship with the ageing cleric Richard Mansfield, Lovett - who first delighted readers with his bestselling debut The Bookman's Tale - weaves a romantic, suspenseful and compelling novel about love in all its forms and the joys of a life lived in books.
