The Skeleton Road by Val McDermid

Lovereading view...

One of the Top 10 Lovereading Reader Review Panel Summer Read selections.

McDermid fans may well be surprised with this ‘crime mystery’ for it is more a history of the recent Balkan War and the siege of Dubrovnik than it is a whodunit. Yes, there is a body, one Dimitar Petrovik, a colonel in the Croatian army who disappeared after visiting his English lover, for his body turns up in an Edinburgh mock gothic building under repair, but two thirds of the book gives us details of that dreadful war. The terror of bombardments, the deprivations suffered by those under siege and the terrible atrocities carried out by both the Serbs and the Croats are all evocatively described. Containing romance, betrayal, revenge, intrigue and tragedy, this is very different from Val McDermid’s previous novels. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

If you like Val McDermid you might also like to read books by Jane Casey, Fred Vargas and Mark Billingham.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. In this standalone novel set in Edinburgh, a Gothic building is being renovated when a skeleton is discovered. Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie is handed the thankless task of discovering whom these dusty bones belonged to, but she is to find that a raft of dark and dangerous secrets will be dragged into the light. Her investigation takes her to a dangerous Croatia where she sees at first hand the horrors of the Balkans conflict. But as Karen uncovers uncomfortable truths, there is an individual cutting a violent swathe through luckless victims, ruthlessly enacting a very personal concept of justice and retribution. The reckoning, when it comes, is grim. McDermid admirers know that her books will always incorporate cutting social criticism with the drama.
