The Crooked House by Christobel Kent

Lovereading view...

An atmospheric, creepy tale of a deeply traumatised girl, the sole survivor of her murdered family; mother, brother, twin sisters and then the father who turned the gun on himself … or did he? She, Alison, is brought up by her aunt, goes to London for work and eventually meets an older man, Paul, who takes her back to the village where once she lived. It is a small, close-knit community where folk look after their own. She discovers various truths about her family and slowly the menace builds to the conclusion that is kept dark until almost the end. The clues are all there but I’m not sure you’ll spot them; very clever. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Alison lives a quiet, unremarkable and anonymous life, which is how she likes it. But when her fairly recent boyfriend, Paul, wants her to attend a wedding with him she realises her past needs to be resolved. She is actually Esme, the only survivor of a horrific attack on her family many years ago, and the wedding is in the village where the tragedy happened. Returning, she suspects that the villagers hold many secrets, and that the perpetrator of the crime may not be who the police say he is.

Synopsis

The Crooked House by Christobel Kent

One fateful night. One unthinkable family tragedy. One survivor. This is Alison's story. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train and Apple Tree Yard, this stunning psychological thriller follows one woman's search for the truth about her family history. Alison is as close to anonymous as she can get: with no ties and a backroom job, hers is a life lived under the radar. But once Alison was someone else: once she was Esme, a teenager whose bedroom sat at the top of a remote house on a bleak estuary. A girl whose family, if not happy, exactly, was no unhappier than anyone else's - or so she thought. Then one night violence was unleashed in the crooked house, in a nightmare that only Alison survived and from which she's been running ever since. Only when she falls for the charismatic Paul does Alison realise that to have any chance of happiness, she must return to her old life and face a closed community full of dark secrets. As she seeks to uncover the truth of what happened that terrible night, Alison begins to question everything she thought she knew. Is there anyone she can trust?
