Breaking Light by Karin Altenberg

Lovereading view...

A sad, bittersweet tale written out of sequence that slowly reveals an idyllic childhood shattered by the callous deeds of kids. Years of rebuilding, searching, guilt and pain are slowly eroded and Gabriel Askew is eventually able to take up his inheritance and mend. In beautiful and striking prose, especially when steeped in Dartmoor’s haunted landscape, this gently reveals a sad tale about how finally life can be repaired. It is a very fine novel indeed.

If you like Karin Altenberg you might also like to read books by Sebastian Barry, Allan Mallinson and Graham Swift.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Now retired from a life in academia in London, Gabriel returns to the Dartmoor village in which he grew up, and to the house that was the centre of memories of his troubled childhood and youth, and of his friend, Michael. Feeling his way back into the community in which he is now a stranger, he becomes acquainted with another incomer, Mrs Sarobi, and finds himself subject to the unwelcome attention of Doris, a local woman with links to his past. But as ghosts are laid to rest, so a possible new future beckons. Not always comfortable reading, this is a skilled, atmospheric novel about healing and becoming whole.

Synopsis

Breaking Light by Karin Altenberg

Steeped in its bleak and beautiful landscape, Mortford is a place of secrets and memories: of bitter divisions and shattered dreams. Returning to this Dartmoor village where he grew up, Gabriel attempts to come to terms with what he lost as a boy so long ago. Slowly the mysteries hidden in this small community on the edge of the moors begin to unravel. But one of Gabriel's memories remains sharper than all the others: that of his boyhood friend Michael, the tenderness of their first summers and the violent betrayal that destroyed it. And, intruding on his self-enforced isolation, the beautiful Mrs Sarobi, meddling Doris Ludgate and the frightful spectre of Jim of Blackaton will become bound in with Gabriel's search for acceptance and the possibility of love. In her striking, lyrical prose, Karin Altenberg imagines what it is to be incomplete. Set in this haunted landscape, a mesmerising tale is told of the ways in which something once broken in two may, finally, be made whole.
