Who is Sue Baker

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Bill Browder is an American who holds a British passport and became the largest foreign investor in Russia, only to be booted out of the country. The reason for that is his campaign to have the truth about a brutal murder brought to the attention of the world, and especially those who, despite everything, believe Vladimir Putin is a man to be trusted. Browder’s book tells how his friend, the lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, was chained in a cell and beaten to death by Putin’s officials who were furious at his exposure of their corruption. They had siphoned off millions of dollars paid in taxes by Browder’s company and wanted still more. The book reads like a Cold War thriller, but Browder vouches for the truth of the brutality and depravity of Putin’s regime that he exposes. Above all it tells of the courage of Sergei Magnitsky, a man who gave his life for the highest of ideals.

Synopsis

Red Notice How I Became Putin's No. 1 Enemy by Bill Browder

November 2009. An emaciated young lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, is led to a freezing isolation cell in a Moscow prison, handcuffed to a bed rail, and beaten to death by eight police officers. His crime? To testify against the Russian Interior Ministry officials who were involved in a conspiracy to steal $230 million of taxes paid to the state by one of the world's most successful hedge funds. Magnitsky's brutal killing has remained uninvestigated and unpunished to this day. His farcical posthumous show-trial brought Putin's regime to a new low in the eyes of the international community. Red Notice is a searing expose of the wholesale whitewash by Russian authorities of Magnitsky's imprisonment and murder, slicing deep into the shadowy heart of the Kremlin to uncover its sordid truths. Bill Browder - the hedge fund manager who employed Magnitsky - takes us on his explosive journey from the heady world of finance in New York and London in the 1990s, through his battles with ruthless oligarchs in the turbulent landscape of post-Soviet Union Moscow, to his expulsion from Russia on Putin's orders. Browder's graphic portrait of the Russian government as a criminal enterprise wielding all the power of a sovereign state illuminates his personal transformation from financier to human rights activist, campaigning for justice for his late lawyer and friend. With fraud, bribery, corruption and torture exposed at every turn, Red Notice is a shocking but true political roller-coaster that plays out in the highest echelons of Western power.

Reviews

'Reads like a classic thriller, with an everyman hero alone and in danger in a hostile foreign city ... but it's all true, and it's a story that needs to be told.' Lee Child

'The story of Sergei Magnitsky's life and death is a shocking true-life thriller, and Bill Browder was the man to write it.' Tom Stoppard

'A harrowing and inspiring story ... a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the culture of corruption and impunity in Putin's Russia today, and Browder's heroic example of how to fight back. US Senator John McCain Browder's narrative lays out in vivid detail the often murky mechanisms of Russia's kleptocratic economy, culminating in an engrossing account of what would surely be the heist of a century were it not so representative of business as usual. It's also a chilling, sinister portrait of a society in which the rule of law has been destroyed by those sworn to enforce it. The result is an alternatively harrowing and inspiring saga of appalling crime and undeserved punishment in the Wild East.' Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Bill Browder, founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, was the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005, when he was denied entry to the country after exposing widespread corruption. Since 2009, when his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was murdered in Russian police custody, he has been leading a global campaign to expose human rights abuses endemic in Russia. Consequentially, the 'Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act' was signed into US law in 2012, imposing visa bans and asset freezes on certain officials involved in Magnitsky's death. Browder is currently working to have similar legislation passed across the European Union.
