Death of a Liar by M. C. Beaton

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

By page 24, we have three dead bodies, one of which appears to be a compulsive liar. She cried rape on the phone to the police and wasn’t, so when she cried ‘intruder’ no one believed her. If they had she might still be alive. Alongside her tale run the conversion of the local school house and the arrival of two Londoners, very unpleasant characters. This is a Sergeant Hamish Macbeth Scottish mystery full of black humour and rural observations. Those familiar with the series know what to expect. Those new to the series can start anywhere and love them all.

If you like M. C. Beaton you might also like to read books by Loretta Chase, Mary Deasy and Carola Dunn.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The remote Highland town of Lochdubh has seen its fair share of baffling crimes over the years, and Hamish Macbeth’s tricky new case is no exception. It is a cautionary tale about crying wolf and, judging by appearances, laid-back local policeman Hamish is horrified when a woman from a nearby village reports a brutal assault – until evidence suggests she is lying about the attack. The next time she calls to report a break-in at her house, his impulse is to write her off as a compulsive liar, until shortly afterwards, her body is found. Hamish must pick through the victim’s catalogue of lies to find the killer, aided and hampered by an eccentric collection of local characters, distracted by his own unlucky romantic life, with his arch enemy Chief Inspector Blair always ready to throw a spanner in the works, in this humorous – and grisly – addition to M C Beaton’s much-loved series.

About the Author

M. C. Beaton

M. C. Beaton is the renowned bestselling author of the Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series. She has written many detective and romance novels alongside having an illustrious career on Fleet Street. Already a household name and, according to Anne Robinson, a ‘national treasure’, she is ranked among John Grisham and Maeve Binchy as a heavyweight of the publishing world. She divides her time between Paris and a village in the Cotswolds that is very much like Agatha's beloved Carsely.
