The One & Only by Emily Giffin

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A love/loyalty story with American football very much at its centre. We have football coach Carr’s daughter, Lucy, not the least bit interested in her father’s obsession but her best friend Shea completely captivated. She loves the game and has a crush on the coach. She grows up to become a sports journalist. A number of relationships get a bit messy before all is resolved. The publisher would like us to believe we don’t need to love American football to appreciate this but there is a lot of detail about the game so if you do it would certainly enhance your enjoyment of this.

If you like Emily Giffin you might also like to read books by Sophie Kinsella, Melissa Bank and Carmen Reid.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The One & Only by Emily Giffin

Shea Rigsby is content enough with her life in the small town of Walker, Texas. She has her dream fangirl job working for Walker's football team, a satisfactory-enough relationship with her boyfriend, and even if maybe she's got the sneaking feeling life is passing her by, she's not quite confident enough to do anything about it. But when the mother of Lucy, Shea's best friend, dies suddenly everything changes. Lucy's father, now a widower, is the town's charismatic football coach, Clive Carr, and Shea's hero since she was a young girl. Coach Carr is now alone as he and Shea grow closer than ever, Shea realises she can't help how she feels ...for the father of her best friend, who's grieving his wife. Thoughtful, intense and brilliantly observed, THE ONE & ONLY is a luminous novel about finding your passion and, most of all, believing in something amazing for yourself: it's the one and only thing that makes life worth living.
