The Facts of Life and Death by Belinda Bauer

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Shortlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award 2015.

Another fine work by this author. Unusual for a thriller the police are not the main characters, it is the Devon seaside village of Limeburn and its inhabitants that dominate. The rundown community is beautifully portrayed with the mind-set of a ten year old particularly well done and it is her diary that helps unravel the story. We are told who the murderer is about two-thirds of the way through and given his scarred background. Eventually the sea becomes a huge factor in this impressive and highly absorbing tale. ~ Sarah Broadhurst

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The talented Belinda Bauer has made a mark as one of the most unusual (and unorthodox) crime writers. This is one of her most challenging, and demands more of the reader than some of her earlier books. A North Devon seaside community is fearing the effects of flooding, but a more pressing concern is a ruthless serial killer who is cutting a swathe through the vulnerable people in the community. Bauer is never afraid to tackle difficult issues, and this unrelenting novel is not an easy read; but those who have been following her career with interest need not hesitate.

Synopsis

The Facts of Life and Death by Belinda Bauer

Shortlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award 2015.

Bauer's great gift is her ability to surprise the reader ...She makes you think a bit differently about the world . (Daily Telegraph). On the beaches and cliffs of North Devon, young women have become victims in a terrifying game where only one player knows the rules. And when those rules change, the new game is Murder. But a madman on the loose feels very far from the crumbling, seaside home of ten-year-old Ruby Trick. Instead she lives in constant fear of school bullies, the dark forest, and the threat of her parents' divorce. Helping her father to catch the killer seems like the only way to keep him close. As long as the killer doesn't catch her first.
