High Crime Area Tales of Darkness and Dread by Joyce Carol Oates

Lovereading view...

Eight surprisingly different and somewhat disturbing short stories are packed together, (perhaps sometimes a little too close for comfort) in this arresting and striking book. Your thoughts often want to scuttle away and hide as you read some of these tales, they can be challenging, uncomfortable and troublesome to your soul, however it is very difficult to put this book down! The author has the skill to let you feel sympathy, to let you connect and empathise with these diverse, sometimes flawed and often sorrowful characters, while at the same time making you flinch and recoil in shock. These short stories pack a punch, this is a book to make you reflect and ponder, to make you think. ~ Liz Robinson
