Sarah Broadhurst's view...

You may know this prolific author from her True Blood Sookie Stackhouse series or from her many gentle crime tales: the Aurora Teagarden novels, the Lily Bard Shakespeare mysteries or her Harper Connelly grave series. Now she starts something new in an area she truly excels in, small town mysteries with strong characters and a supernatural twist. This is the first in the Texas series set in a quiet, strange little town, Midnight. Manfred is the new guy in town and will obviously be our series hero. He is a psychic. The town’s inhabitants consist of Fiji, who can freeze people, she has a talking cat; Lemuel, who is a vampire with a girlfriend Olivia; Bobo appears normal but is depressed as his girlfriend has left town; and there is a mysterious family of a 14-year old lad, Connor, and his 18-year old sister, Creek, whom our hero begins to get close to. No doubt many more will be added as the series progresses. Early on we get a dead body, Bobo’s girlfriend, and the fun starts. This is a terrific read, an excellent beginning to what promises to be a wonderful series.

Synopsis

Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse the world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a new, darker world - populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that's how the locals prefer it? Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It's a pretty standard dried-up western town. There's a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There's a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there's new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he's found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own). Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth ...

'A gently paced mystery with a supernatural slant, populated by endearing, varied and well-constructed characters...Definitely recommend.'

-Civilian Reader

'I can see many nights being lost to the wonder of Midnight. 4 /5.'

-Backwards Compatible

'A slow burning novel which successfully juggles setting the scene for an ongoing series with a self-contained story.'

-Sci-Fi

'Bulletin Fans might be sad to say good-bye to Sookie, but they'll be so intrigued by the denizens of Midnight they won't have time to mourn.'

-A Knife and a Quill

'Midnight Crossroad is another compelling book by Charlaine Harris. I love her storytelling style and the wonderful characters she creates Following the Nerd I was blown away by Midnight Crossroad. It's a wholly immersive, stunningly written adventure that I couldn't put down. The characters are spot on and unforgettable, the plot is exciting - the only negative thing is that I have to (very impatiently) wait for book two!!!'

-Carly Bennett Blogspot

'The inclusion of a mystery that starts simply and then winds out of control so that no one can be trusted makes this is a blast to read. Everyone is your friend in Midnight, but you don't know everything about anyone. I can't wait for Midnight to come again. Overall grade: A.'

-Sci-Fi Pulse

'If you have read anything by Charlaine Harris I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. If you haven't read anything by Charlaine Harris, then Midnight Crossroad might be the book to get you started.'
