Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A huge departure from this author’s crime novels for this is an historical family saga of complicated relationships, misunderstandings, deceit and revenge. Mathew Fleming returns to Scotland after being injured at Waterloo. Assumed dead years earlier his sweetheart had married another. Mathew’s reaction to this, his connection to her family, his re-entry to civilian life and his success in business make for an interesting read but I think his crime novels are better.

If you like Quintin Jardine you might also like to read books by Tony Black, Bill Knox and Ian Rankin.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. This new historical thriller is a bit of a departure for Quintin Jardine whose gritty Bob Skinner novels are set in present-day Edinburgh, but he’s not all that far from Edinburgh here in early-19th- century Lanarkshire after the Battle of Waterloo. Mathew Fleming is a brave soldier with a great code of honour who returns home, and, like all returning warriors, he is a changed person but in the same old setting. When a dreadful murder occurs, Mathew’s moral code, combined with his warrior’s instinct, is truly put to the test. Gripping and ingenious, this is a bit of a tour de force.

Synopsis

Mathew's Tale by Quintin Jardine

In this, his landmark fortieth novel, Quintin Jardine tells the remarkable story of a man's quest for justice - at any cost. 1818, Carluke, Lanarkshire. Mathew Fleming returns home to Scotland following heroic service at the Battle of Waterloo. After seven years away, he is a ghostly presence to those he left behind. But Mathew is ambitious and soon becomes a man of influence in his county and beyond. Yet through all his success, he still hides the loss of his one true love. When a terrible act of murder occurs, Mathew must choose between the rule of blood and the rule of law. And as a man of honour with a warrior's instincts, he embarks on a journey of vengeance that will test every sinew of his faith in mankind...

About the Author

Twenty years ago Quintin Jardine abandoned the life of a media relations consultant for the more morally acceptable world of murder and mayhem. Over thirty published novels later, it's a decision that he has never regretted. Happily married, he splits his time between Scotland and Spain.
