Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is the seventh book in a series, beginning with Wounds of Honour, which follows Marcus Aquila, a Roman soldier leading his men on perilous adventures through the Empire all the while trying to stay one step ahead of the crazed Emperor Commodus’ assassins. Rather excitingly this book takes place almost exclusively in Rome itself which provides much opportunity for lush description, politics, intrigue and a whole host of characters Aquila has met throughout his adventures. His purpose is to find and kill the Emperor’s ‘Knives’ who killed his family and his quest for revenge takes him into the most dangerous place in the whole empire – the Coliseum, the Gladiator’s arena. Brilliant, bloody stuff.

If you like Anthony Riches you might also like to read books by Robert Fabbri, Ian Ross and Harry Sidebottom.

Synopsis

The Emperor's Knives by Anthony Riches

The seventh novel in Anthony Riches' acclaimed Empire sequence brings Marcus Aquila back to Rome, hunting the men who destroyed his family. But the revenge he craves may cost him and those around him dearly. The young centurion's urge to exact his own brutal justice upon the shadowy cabal of assassins who butchered his family means that he must face them on their own ground, risking his own death at their hands. A senator, a gang boss, a praetorian officer and, deadliest of all, champion gladiator Mortiferum - the Death Bringer - lie in wait. The knives are unsheathed, and ready for blood ...

Reviews

'This is fast-paced and gripping read-through-the-night fiction, with marvellous characters and occasional moments of dark humour. Some authors are better historians than they are storytellers. Anthony Riches is brilliant at both.'

-Conn Iggulden

'A damn fine read ... fast-paced, action-packed. Ben Kane Stands head and shoulders above a crowded field ... real, live characters act out their battles on the northern borders with an accuracy of detail and depth of raw emotion that is a rare combination.'

-Manda Scott
