Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A prequel to the author’s long running series which concludes with Strange Shores, some nine books later. Here Erlendur is a young officer on nights only. It’s the slot most newcomers get given but the nights are long in Iceland and lots goes on. Innocent and somewhat naïve, Erlendur befriends a tramp who eventually drowns, then a woman goes missing and Erlendur smells a connection. It is a clever tale. Followers of the series will be intrigued and greatly rewarded; newcomers have lots to move on to. He is very good.

If you like Arnaldur Indridason you might also like to read books by Hakan Nesser, Dana Stabenow and Ian Rankin.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The books of master Scand-inavian crime writer Arnaldur Indridason are among the most highly regarded in the current Nordic Noir wave. Reykjavik Nights is as trenchantly written as anything by this talented author, with Indridason’s coppers Erlendur and Sigurdur Óli as flinty as ever, although this is an early adventure for the former. Here, Erlendur is a young officer doing less-demanding work than we are used to seeing him undertaking, but then a homeless man that he knows is discovered dead. Needless to say, he is soon on his way to showing the skill that will flourish later. Aficionados of the author will be aware that narrative is always foregrounded, but character is never neglected.

Synopsis

Reykjavik Nights by Arnaldur Indridason

The Living - Erlendur works nights. He's a young officer in Traffic, not yet a detective. And Reykjavik's nights are full of car crashes, robberies, drinkers and fighters. Sometimes an unexplained death. The Lost - A homeless man Erlendur knows is found drowned. But few people care. Or when a young woman on her way home from a club vanishes. Both cases go cold. The Searcher - Two lost people from two different worlds. Erlendur is not an investigator, but his instincts tell him their fates are worth pursuing. How could they be linked? In The Heart Of The Night - Inexorably, he is drawn into the blackness of the city's underbelly, where everyone is in the dark or on the run.
