The Last Refuge by Craig Robertson

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

We’ve had three excellent novels from this author all featuring a Glaswegian police photographer, Tony Winter. Now Robertson moves on to new ground, a dark, atmospheric tale set in the Faroe Islands and starring John Callum, a school teacher with a secret he is running away from. He is welcomed into the close-knit community, gets a job on a fish farm, rents an old shack, gets close to a girl (the minister’s daughter) and does a lot of drinking. Then murder is committed and he is a natural suspect. But there are other strangers on the island. How Callum, with help from the girl, gets to the bottom of all that is going on is thrilling. The whole thing is good, the complex characters, the plot, the setting and the conclusion. Highly recommended.

If you like Craig Robertson you might also like to read books by Jo Nesbo, Peter May and Denise Mina.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. In the space of four or five books, Craig Robertson has established himself as one of the most adroit practitioners of the crime novel at work today, with an unerring command of narrative, as The Last Refuge reminds us. Those who have read earlier books by Robertson will not be at all surprised to hear with what authority he delivers his cool but involving scenario. The accoutrements may appear to be those of Scandinavian crime fiction, but this is, in fact, something very individual – and readers will find that it is quite unlike most other crime novels they have encountered.

Synopsis

The Last Refuge by Craig Robertson

You can run from your past but you can never hide from yourself When John Callum arrives on the Faroe Islands, determined to sever all ties with his previous life and make a new start, he is surprised by how quickly he is welcomed into the close-knit community. But no matter what he changes in his outward life, the debilitating nightmares that haunt him just won't stop. Then the sleepy peace is shattered by an almost unheard of crime on the Island: murder. A specialist team of detectives arrives from Denmark to help the local police, who are completely ill-equipped for a manhunt of this scale. But when tensions arise, and the community closes rank to protect its own, outsider Ryan will have to watch his back. But more terrifying than that, why can't he shake the suspicion that the crime could have had something to do with him?
