Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Based on Mark Evans’ hit Radio 4 series of the same name (he also wrote The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff for TV) this an exceedingly comedic take on Dickens’ classic. Witty, irreverent and at times very funny, do not read it if you don’t like the classics to be messed about with, do if you love affectionate and hilarious parodies.

If you like Mark Evans you might also like to read books by Charlie Brooker, Seth Grahame-Smith and Stephen Fry.

Synopsis

Bleak Expectations by Mark Evans

Based on the beloved Radio 4 series, Bleak Expectations recounts the remarkable adventures of young Pip Bin as he tries to make his way in a world made all horrible by the machinations of his cruel guardian, Mr Gently Benevolent. Grim circumstances, mistaken identities, nightmarish court-cases, ridiculous names, convenient coincidences to resolve plot problems, over-sentimental death scenes and lots and lots of adjectives: Bleak Expectations is a novel like Charles Dickens might have written after far too much gin.

Reviews

The funniest book since the one I haven't written yet. Mark Evans sets the bar annoyingly high. -- Robert Webb

Deliciously irreverent spoof of all things Victorian and melodramatic...Evans keeps the gag rate high. - The Observer

A brilliant Dickens pastiche. - The Telegraph

About the Author

Mark Evans has written really quite often for television and radio, including five series of Radio 4's Bleak Expectations, BBC2's The Bleak Old Shop Of Stuff and That Mitchell and Webb Look. He is also the author of this book, the one you're holding or looking at now. He lives in North London with one wife, no dog and enough children, thank you, and can be bribed quite easily to do most things involving words.
