The House of Dolls by David Hewson

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

David Hewson turned the TV scripts of The Killings into very accurate and exciting novels. Now he turns back to his own story and very good it is too. Set in Amsterdam we have warring drug barons and corrupt politicians and policemen. The foremost crime is the disappearance of the daughter of a politician who is trying to rid Amsterdam of the drug and red light districts. To help solve the crime a policeman, Pieter Voss, is called out of retirement. He left the force when his own daughter disappeared three years earlier. Voss chooses Laura Bakker for his sidekick, a young and unsophisticated recruit from a very rural area. This book has everything: great and varied characters, violence, corruption, family trauma, highly recommended.

If you like David Hewson you might also like to read books by Jo Nesbo, Jussi Adler-Olsen and Henning Mankell.

One day, while Vos is wasting time at the Rijksmuseum staring at a doll's house that seems to be connected in some way to the case, Laura Bakker, a misfit trainee detective from the provinces, visits him. She's come to tell him that Katja Prins, daughter of an important local politician, has gone missing in circumstances similar to Anneliese. In the company of the intriguing and awkward Bakker Vos finds himself drawn back into the life of a detective. A life which he thought he had left behind.
