The Facts of Life and Death by Belinda Bauer

Lovereading view...

Another fine work by this author. Unusual for a thriller the police are not the main characters, it is the Devon seaside village of Limeburn and its inhabitants that dominate. The rundown community is beautifully portrayed with the mind-set of a ten year old particularly well done and it is her diary that helps unravel the story. We are told who the murderer is about two-thirds of the way through and given his scarred background. Eventually the sea becomes a huge factor in this impressive and highly absorbing tale.

If you like Belinda Bauer you might also like to read books by Val McDermid, Stephen Booth and Ingrid Black.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The talented Belinda Bauer has made a mark as one of the most unusual (and unorthodox) crime writers. This is one of her most challenging, and demands more of the reader than some of her earlier books. A North Devon seaside community is fearing the effects of flooding, but a more pressing concern is a ruthless serial killer who is cutting a swathe through the vulnerable people in the community. Bauer is never afraid to tackle difficult issues, and this unrelenting novel is not an easy read; but those who have been following her career with interest need not hesitate.

And when those rules change, the new game is Murder. Living with her parents in the dank beach community of Limeburn, ten-year-old Ruby Trick has her own fears. Bullies on the school bus, the forest crowding her house into the sea, and the threat of divorce. Helping her Daddy to catch the killer might be the key to keeping him close. As long as the killer doesn't catch her first...
