Stormzy, the Brit Award winning grime artist has announced that he is joining up with one of the UK’s largest publishing houses, Penguin Random House. This collaboration will launch a new publishing imprint as Stormzy looks to expand his #Merky empire. The popular artist has already developed a music festival and a record label and has now turned his attention to the publishing world to help young writers to become published authors.
Stormzy announced the collaboration on his Instagram on the 6th July:
“I know too many talented writers that don’t always have an outlet or a means to get their work seen and hopefully #Merky Books can now be a reference point for them to say, ‘I can be an author’ and for that to be a realistic and achievable goal.”
I have been revealed that, although the publishing industry is seeing an increase in sales, it is becoming harder and harder to make a living. A recent survey shows authors’ incomes have decreased by 42% in the last decade. Several different pressures seeing publishing companies hesitant to support younger writers and even then, only offer support to new writers for one or two books. Authors trying to fulfill their dream of becoming a bestselling author find themselves working as a teacher, in journalism or in a different sector in order to supplement their income. This pressure to earn enough money could lead to a lack of interest in the industry for potential new authors. It is great to see the creation of a publishing imprint with young people in mind. Hopefully, #Merky Books will support budding young writers and encourage other publishing companies to show their support in the next generation of writers.
As a part of Stormzy’s announcement, he also said that #Merky Books will offer a paid internship in 2019. The first book to be released by this Imprint is the grime artist’s own Rise Up: The #Merky Story So Far. Penguin Random House has said that this book will include “hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, annotated lyrics and contributions from those closest to him. Rise Up is Stormzy’s Story, in his words and the record of a journey unlike any other”.
We look forward to the release of Rise Up and the next bestselling authors supported by #Merky Books.
