We all love a library here at LoveReading. It was personally where I first forged my love of books as I wandered around being inspired as a 5 year old in my local library in Liverpool.

To this day it holds a special place in my heart although it’s a far cry from the incredible institutions that have again this year been shortlisted for the coveted Public Library of the Year Award presented by Systematic and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. The IFLA is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession.

For the sixth time, this award honours new, innovative public libraries and the jury has narrowed 32 libraries down to five nominees in the quest for this year’s winner of the award for the world’s best public library. And my, what a beautiful bunch of bibliotheca they are: all newly built public libraries that combines functional architecture with creative IT solutions and includes digital development with local culture. S

This year, the five finalists come from very different parts of the world, sadly none from the UK:

Marrickville Library, Australia

Deichman Bjørvika - Oslo Public Library, Norway

Het Predikheren, Belgium

Ningbo New Library, China

Forum Groningen, Holland

Take a look at the five shortlisted libraries. The nominated libraries are distinguished by sustainable recycling of materials, natural daylight incorporated into the buildings, and many unique, architectural details.

The winner will be announced during IFLA's annual congress, held online this year from 17 – 19 August and the award is presented by IFLA’s president Christine Mackenzie.

The date’s in the diary, we’ll be looking on with interest to see who pips the others to the post.
