Fall in Love with a Book Series

Liz Robinson

By Liz Robinson on 10th August 2020

There really is nothing better in terms of reading, than finding a series that becomes firmly lodged in your heart and soul. A much loved series, that hits all the right spots, often sits in pride of place on our bookshelves. Here at LoveReading we adore the feeling of 'more please' when you get to the end of a book in a series or trilogy. Mind you, the wait until the next book can sometimes be excruciating! There is also the complete and utter joy of discovering an established series. Have you ever gorged, yes completely gorged on book after book until you feel fair-on-giddy and end up with a book hangover? We have!

We actually found it difficult to restrict ourselves to the books we have mentioned here, and emails shot all over the place as we shouted: "we just have to include this one!". These are all books that have spoken to us, some have been with us since we were children or teens, and quite a few are those that we regularly re-read.

A fabulous series is one that stands the test of time, that you can read again and each time find something new. A series can speak to you in a different way as the years pass. We think that most booky people have at least one series that calls to them, demanding attention, wanting to be read. If you were to ask for someone’s top ten books, I’m pretty sure that a series would feature in there somewhere, though picking just one book is just impossible, so it would have to exist in its entirety!

Some of our favourite series and trilogies here at LoveReading include:

Sarah Hilary and her DI Marnie Rome series. When we first featured Sarah's debut Someone Else’s Skin we knew we had found something special. We have waited eagerly for each new book. They are filled with clever penetrative writing, huge tension and some pretty fantastic characters.

Bernard Cornwell has written some absolutely cracking historical series of course, including Sharpe, and The Last Kingdom, both of which have been made into TV series. A particular favourite though, is the trilogy we have chosen here, The Warlord Chronicles. The legend of King Arthur sits centre stage, these books are a powerhouse of a read and thoroughly entertaining.

We absolutely adore Deborah Harkness and her All Souls trilogy. As a historian, she blends reality, history and fantasy into one heady, wonderful blend of witches, vampires, and daemons battling for survival. The first book A Discovery of Witches was published in 2011 and the final book in 2014, the series has been a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller and a TV series is out in the world too.

We just had to include Gregg Hurwitz and his Orphan X thriller series, boy did the first book Orphan X explode off the blocks! An assassin with a heart leads this exhilarating series and it is a favourite in our team.

Oh my, L. A. Weatherly's Broken Trilogy is an absolute stunner, it starts with Broken Sky, which is a Young Adult dystopian fantasy. It is particularly hard-hitting as it reflects on our history and you can easily see where we could be heading. Original, fascinating, fabulous!

We have featured the first book of each series in this list and when you click into the book page, you will see the series in order. In addition, don't forget the series are all linked, by the series name in the header of the page, for easy reference too.

As always this list is in no particular order, do let us know which book series you have loved and would like to see included in this collection.

Outlander (Cross Stitch)

Outlander (Cross Stitch)

Author: Diana Gabaldon Format: Paperback Release Date: 19/02/2015

Oh what an entertaining series this is, I have read each book as it has been published since the early 1990’s. Cross Stitch is the first in the series and sets the scene for Claire and Jamie’s meeting. This is historical fiction with just the tiniest winiest smidgeon of fantasy as Claire Randall steps through a stone circle in 1945 into the midst of a skirmish in 1743. Diana Gabaldon wields a mighty pen, combining a beautiful relationship story with bloody battles, political shenanigans and a somewhat brutal fight for survival. The Outlander series is now on TV, I highly recommend starting with the books, they are fabulous!  Books in The Outlander Series: 1. Outlander / Cross Stitch 2. Dragonfly in Amber 3. Voyager 4. Drums of Autumn 5. The Fiery Cross 6. A Breath of Snow and Ashes 7. An Echo in the Bone 8. Written in My Own Heart's Blood Serial Reader? My Family and Other Animals

My Family and Other Animals

Author: Gerald Durrell Format: Paperback Release Date: 03/03/2016

I first read these as a young teen, and as an owner of a variety of animals myself, felt a particular affinity with Gerry. I re-read the books in my early twenties while in Corfu, and of course the age difference added depth and location even more colour. These are books you can read at any age, wonderfully evocative they whisk you back in time. There is a lightness of touch that charms, while the humour delights. Simply gorgeous! Books in The Corfu Trilogy: 1. My Family and Other Animals 2. Birds, Beasts and Relatives 3. The Garden of the Gods Serial Reader?
