LoveReading Book Club Feature #5: Appetite Book Club

Liz Robinson

By Liz Robinson on 5th November 2018

We are loving hearing from all of our Book Clubs, people coming together over a mutual love of books. We want to make the most of our Book Club serial, which means offering book clubs (who usually meet once a month and whose members and organisers have jobs and life commitments to attend to too!) a little more time to get back to us. This means we'll get a more in-depth insight into their book communities.

Don't worry we haven't stopped looking for Book Clubs, and if you would love to get involved with this feature then get in touch at

Jo Coldwell from Appetite Book Club answers our questions this month, I love their Breakfast at Tiffany’s evening - how glamorous!

What is your book club called, when did it launch and how did that come about?

Appetite Book Club launched in 2007 when my friends opened a cafe called Appetite

Talk to me about how it’s developed over the years.

The cafe closed within the year but 2 marriages and a book club came out of it!  Appetite Book Club has now been going for over 10 years

Describe your book club in three words

Informal, welcoming, fun

How do you choose your books?

We have ten books a year.  One is chosen from The Booker Shortlist, one is a classic and one is chosen from a 'game' we play.

How often do you meet?

Where do you meet?

The club outgrew our first venue so now we meet at three different venues per month.  One is the Red Lion Bookshop in Colchester

What is the format of your meetings?

Either coffee/tea and cake if it's a daytime meeting or a two course supper with a glass of wine if it's the evening meeting

What are you reading right now?

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.  I am in love with the main character

Do you have a favourite format of book? (hardback, paperback, ebook, audiobook)?

Paperback so that it is appealing to all purses but I have done a deal with publishers on hardbacks in the past.

What is your favourite book of 2018 so far?

Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie

Do you collectively have a favourite author?

No, there are too many of us but a lot of people like Maggie O'Farrell

Has there been a particular highlight of your time together?

So many. We recently dressed up for ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's'.

If you were to give anyone out there some advice on setting up a Book Club what would it be?

Just do it and stick with it, even when numbers fall low. There are now 100 of us in my book group. 30 meeting during the daytime, 30 during the evening and another 60 at a second evening event.
