The Illumination of Ursula Flight by Anna-Marie Crowhurst

Charlotte Walker

By Charlotte Walker on 15th May 2018

The Illumination of Ursula Flight by Anna-Marie Crowhurst one of LoveReading’s Books of the Month for May. This Historical fiction follows Ursula Flight, a spirited girl with dreams of the stage and a difficult destiny ahead. Set in the 17th Century, Ursula is educated by her more forward-thinking father. She has dreams of becoming a famous playwright. However, her family have other ideas. Although she has been educated, Ursula is expected to marry. This amazing coming-of-age novel was loved by our Editorial Experts and Reader Review Panel Members who had the opportunity to read this book.

Liz Robinson, our Editorial Expert called this book:

“An intimate, beautifully told, occasionally rambunctious tale set in 17th century England … Anna-Marie Crowhurst has created a vibrant, stunning setting for Ursula, the countryside of her childhood is so beautifully imagined, I found myself looking around, smelling, touching, feeling.”

Our Reader Review Panel were similarly enthusiastic about Anna-Marie Crowhurst’s fantastic book and it’s confident and creative protagonist. The beautifully representation of Restoration-era theatre provides a flamboyant world for Ursula to navigate. Here are what a few of our Reader review panel thought:

Glenda Worth - 'A brilliant debut novel by Anna-Marie Crowhurst, a coming of age story with a difference.  A Seventeenth century romp through the age of bawdy behaviour and male dominance.'

Deborah Dumville - 'Clever, spirited, funny and full of life, Ursula uses her plays to say the things and live the life she dares not dream of I loved her, even though perhaps at times I shouldn’t have. Fie!'

Kathryn Whitfield - 'Fantastic story!!  I found this such an enjoyable read. A fun historical novel based around the life of the lovable character Ursula.'
