There really is nothing better in terms of reading, than finding a series that becomes firmly lodged in your heart and soul. A much loved series, that hits all the right spots, often sits in pride of place on our bookshelves. Here at LoveReading we adore the feeling of 'more please' when you get to the end of a book in a series or trilogy. Mind you, the wait until the next book can sometimes be excruciating! There is also the complete and utter joy of discovering an established series. Have you ever gorged, yes completely gorged on book after book until you feel fair-on-giddy and end up with a book hangover? We have!

We actually found it difficult to restrict ourselves to the books we have mentioned here, and emails shot all over the place as we shouted: "we just have to include this one!". These are all books that have spoken to us, some have been with us since we were children or teens, and quite a few are those that we regularly re-read.

A fabulous series is one that stands the test of time, that you can read again and each time find something new. A series can speak to you in a different way as the years pass. We think that most booky people have at least one series that calls to them, demanding attention, wanting to be read. If you were to ask for someone’s top ten books, I’m pretty sure that a series would feature in there somewhere, though picking just one book is just impossible, so it would have to exist in its entirety!

Some of our favourite series and trilogies here at LoveReading include:

Since taking the world by storm with her Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series, Sarah J. Maas has demonstrated time and again that she knows how to write emotionally investing high fantasy stories with strong female characters at their heart. In Crescent City, her latest series, we are introduced to Bryce Quinlan, a lead character that has her world turned upside down and must go in search of answers and revenge. Unlike Maas' other popular series, Crescent City is an urban fantasy, mixing fantasy lore and creatures in a modern setting.

Sarah Hilary and her DI Marnie Rome series. When we first featured Sarah's debut Someone Else’s Skin we knew we had found something special. We have waited eagerly for each new book. They are filled with clever penetrative writing, huge tension and some pretty fantastic characters.

Bernard Cornwell has written some absolutely cracking historical series of course, including Sharpe, and The Last Kingdom, both of which have been made into TV series. A particular favourite though, is the trilogy we have chosen here, The Warlord Chronicles. The legend of King Arthur sits centre stage, these books are a powerhouse of a read and thoroughly entertaining.

The thrilling investigations of DS George Cross by Tim Sullivan, Detective Sergeant George Cross of the Avon and Somerset Police has unfailing logic, determination and the mediating presence of DS Josie Ottey to help maintain his unimpeachable record and conviction rate. There are six DC Cross thrillers so far, starting with The Dentist first published in 2021, up to The Teacher due to be released on the 18th January. So plenty of compelling, page-turning cases to intrigue you while waiting for the next instalment.

We absolutely adore Deborah Harkness and her All Souls trilogy. As a historian, she blends reality, history and fantasy into one heady, wonderful blend of witches, vampires, and daemons battling for survival. The first book A Discovery of Witches was published in 2011 and the final book in 2014, the series has been a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller and a TV series is out in the world too.

We just had to include Gregg Hurwitz and his Orphan X thriller series, boy did the first book Orphan X explode off the blocks! An assassin with a heart leads this exhilarating series and it is a favourite in our team.

Oh my, L. A. Weatherly's Broken Trilogy is an absolute stunner, it starts with Broken Sky, which is a Young Adult dystopian fantasy. It is particularly hard-hitting as it reflects on our history and you can easily see where we could be heading. Original, fascinating, fabulous!

We have featured the first book of each series in this list and in the 'about' section of the book page you can find the series name, with a link to the rest of the books, for easy reference too.

As always this list is in no particular order, do let us know which book series you have loved and would like to see included in this collection.
