Gerhard X. Ritter received both his B.A. degree with honors in 1966 and his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a Florida Blue Key Distinguished Professor Emeritus in both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) of the University of Florida. He was the Chair of the CISE department from 1994 to 2001, and Acting Chair from 2011 to 2012. Professor Ritter has written more than 140 research papers in subjects ranging from pure and applied mathematics to pattern recognition, computer vision, and artificial neural networks. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision, and founding member and first chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Activity Group on Imaging Science (SIAG-IS).
