Walks and Scrambles in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas Tafraout, Jebel El Kest, Ait Mansour, Ameln Valley, Taskra and Tanalt

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 08/11/2018

The walks and scrambles in this guidebook explore the wild and rugged landscapes of the Anti-Atlas mountains of southern Morocco, with Tafraout and the Ameln Valley as the main base. 41 adventurous routes of between 3 and 40km include Jebel el Kest, Adra Mkorn and Ait Mansour, with an outline of a 1 week long-distance trek across the north-west Anti-Atlas. Walks are mainly moderate to difficult, and scrambles are Grade 1 to Grade 3+, with ropes being required for some sections. Often remote and challenging, the routes are suitable for confident walkers and scramblers with good navigation skills. Each route description is accompanied by mapping, with some photo topos to aid route finding in tricky sections. The guidebook also gives background information on the people, culture and history of the region, as well as a wealth of advice on planning a trip, making it an indispensable guide to exploring this dramatic region. The mountains and landscapes of the Anti-Atlas extend over 300km north east from the Atlantic Ocean to Jebel Sirwa (3305m). This guidebook covers an area of more than 4000m(2) in the north-west of the region. The spectacular, rugged surroundings include mountains, gorges, valleys and desert landscapes - whether it is the iconic Lion's Face which dominates the Ameln Valley and the Tafraout oasis, the deep canyons of Ait Mansour, the ancient villages of the Ameln Valley, or the Tanalt backcountry.

Football and Literature in South America

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 30/07/2018

South America is a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world's greatest writers and most celebrated footballers. This is the first book to undertake a systematic study of the relationship between football and literature across South America. Beginning with the first football poem published in 1899, it surveys a range of texts that address key issues in the region's social and political history. Drawing on a substantial corpus of short stories, novels and poems, each chapter considers the shifting relationship between football and literature in South America across more than a century of writing. The way in which authors combine football and literature to challenge the dominant narratives of their time suggests that this sport can be seen as a recurring theme through which matters of identity, nationhood, race, gender, violence, politics and aesthetics are played out. This book is fascinating reading for any student, scholar or serious fan of football, as well as for all those interested in the relationship between sports history, literature and society.

Filming If....

Filming If....

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 12/04/2018

In 1968, Lindsay Anderson filmed IF...., which became a cult film, and is regarded as one of the best British films of all time. David Wood co-starred as one of three rebel schoolboys in a public school. His character, Johnny, along with Mick (Malcolm McDowell) and Wallace (Richard Warwick), led the revolution against authority, which was regarded by many as a metaphor for the social and political situation in the UK. This book contains David's memories of taking part in the film, the personalities involved, the day to day challenges, excitements and fun, and the reception given to the film, including winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The memoir also reflects the brilliance of the idiosyncratic director, Lindsay Anderson, and his team.

What Have We Done The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars

What Have We Done The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars

Author: David Wood Format: Hardback Release Date: 01/11/2016

Most Americans are now familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its prevalence among troops. In this groundbreaking new book, David Wood examines the far more pervasive yet less understood experience of those we send to war: moral injury, the violation of our fundamental values of right and wrong that so often occurs in the impossible moral dilemmas of modern conflict. Featuring portraits of combat veterans and leading mental health researchers, along with Wood's personal observations of war and the young Americans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, WHAT HAVE WE DONE offers an unflinching look at war and those who volunteer for it: the thrill and pride of service and, too often, the scars of moral injury. Impeccably researched and deeply personal, WHAT HAVE WE DONE is a compassionate, finely drawn study of modern war and those caught up in it. It is a call to acknowledge our newest generation of veterans by listening intently to them and absorbing their stories; and, as new wars approach, to ponder the inevitable human costs of putting American boots on the ground.

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 30/07/2016

Alternative propulsion technologies are becoming increasingly important with the rise of stricter regulations for vehicle efficiency, emission regulations, and concerns over the sustainability of crude oil supplies. The fuel cell is a critical component of alternative propulsion systems, and as such has many aspects to consider in its design. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) powered by proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEFC) and fueled by hydrogen, offer the promise of zero emissions with excellent driving range of 300-400 miles, and fast refueling times; two major advantages over battery electric vehicles (BEVs). FCEVs face several remaining major challenges in order to achieve widespread and rapid commercialization. Many of the challenges, especially those from an FCEV system and subsystem cost and performance perspective are addressed in this book.Chapter topics include:Impact of FCEV commercialization Ways to address barriers to the market introduction of alternative vehicles New hydrogen infrastructure cost comparisons Onboard chemical hydride storage Optimization of a fuel cell hybrid vehicle powertrain design. *impact of FCEV commercialization *ways to address barriers to the market introduction of alternative vehicles *new hydrogen infrastructure cost comparisons *onboard chemical hydride storage *optimization of a fuel cell hybrid vehicle powertrain design

This is the first book to address formulaic language directly and provide a foundation of knowledge for graduates and researchers in early stages of study of this important language phenomenon. It is also suitable for students of linguistics, applied linguistics, and language teacher education. The information that currently exists is scattered throughout articles and book chapters across a range of subfields of linguistics and applied linguistics. Over the past few decades there has been a steadily increasing interest and research focus on the phenomenon of formulaic language in the fields of linguistics and applied linguistics. Slowly, a consistent definition has emerged, centring around the idea that formulaic sequences are multi-word units with specific meanings or functions, and some evidence points to their being processed mentally as wholes. Researchers from diverse backgrounds have identified the nature and roles of formulaic sequences in language acquisition and production, in the construction of text and discourse, in spoken and written language, and in language teaching. The increasing volume, diversity, and complexity of the state of knowledge about this emerging area of study is marshalled by this intelligent and well-written book.

Murder, cocaine, street mugging, bombs and aggressive Amazonian Indians combined with exotic beach resorts and colourful characters make David Wood's book on Colombia an interesting and adventurous look at the most dangerous and alluring country in Latin America. David portrays the capital Bogot as a mixture of colourful street people merging with a vibrant culture. The author's travels in Colombia bring him into contact with many different characters and he outlines the problems experienced in a city characterized by the great contrast of wealth and poverty and the influence of the cocaine business. From detailed personal accounts of incidents such as street muggings, a bomb explosion in central Bogot and the blowing up of an aircraft by the drug cartels which results in the death of his business partner, David draws us into the heart of this compelling country. The author gives clear descriptions of life in places like the Sierra Nevada Mountains where he climbs to the lost city of the Tairona Indians and experiences the culture of the Indian tribes. He also considers the history and culture of cities like Cartagena with its colonial heritage. Thinking After Heidegger

Thinking After Heidegger

Author: David Wood Format: Hardback Release Date: 30/08/2002

In Thinking After Heidegger, David Wood takes up the challenge posed by Heidegger -- that after the end of philosophy we need to learn to think. But what if we read Heidegger with the same respectful irreverence that he brought to reading the Greeks, Kant, Hegel, Husserl and the others? For Wood, it is Derridaa s engagements with Heidegger that set the standard here -- enacting a repetition through transformation and displacement. But Wood is not content to crown the new king. Instead he sets up a many--sided conversation between Heidegger, Hegel, Adorno, Nietzsche, Blanchot, Kierkegaard, Derrida and others. Derrida and deconstruction are first critically addressed and then drawn into the fundamental project of philosophical renewal, or renewal as philosophy. The book begins by rewriting Heideggera s inaugural lecture, a What is Metaphysics?a and ends with an extended analysis of the performativity of his extraordinary Beitrage. Thinking after Heidegger will be a valuable text for scholars and students of contemporary philosophy, literature and cultural studies.

The Deconstruction of Time

The Deconstruction of Time

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 28/02/2001

Originally published in 1989, The Deconstruction of Time was the first to examine what has become the fundamental, even defining, project in continental philosophy: double rethinking. Begun by Husserl, this area of inquiry partially seeks to rethink time in terms of our experience of it; a second aspect of the project, begun by Heidegger, is an attempt to rethink our selves (and philosophy itself) in terms of the results of that initial rethinking. Using Derrida as his point of reference, Wood undertakes a critical reformulation of the project through discussions of Nietzsche, Husserl, and Heidegger. The Deconstruction of Time is a critical history of the development of the topic, but also more: it includes important contributions to the phenomenology of time (as cosmic, dialectical, phenomenal, and so on) and a rereading of Derrida himself. In recent years considerations of Wood's themes have grown in import. The Deconstruction of Time is a groundbreaking study of a topic that has become vital in continental philosophy.

Derrida A Critical Reader

Author: David Wood Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/05/1992

Jacques Derrida's prolific output has been the delight (and sometimes the despair) of philosophers and literary theorists for over twenty years. His influence on the way we read theoretical texts continues to be profound. No serious contemporary thinker can fail to come to terms with deconstruction and there have been a number of monographs devoted to his work. Very few, however, have combined a critical edge with a detailed knowledge of his writing. The contributors to this volume were each asked - in the most positive sense - to take just such a critical approach. There are substantive papers by Jean-Luc Nancy, Manfred Frank, John Sallis, Robert Bernasconi, Irene Harvey, Michel Haar, Christopher Norris, Geoff Bennington, John Llewelyn and an introduction by David Wood.

On Paul Ricoeur Narrative and Interpretation

On Paul Ricoeur Narrative and Interpretation

Author: David Wood Format: Hardback Release Date: 26/03/1992

This book examines the later work of Paul Ricoeur, particularly his major work, Time and Narrative . The essays, including three pieces by Ricoeur himself, consider this important study, extending and developing the debate it has inspired. Time and Narrative is the finest example of contemporary philosophical hermeneutics and is one of the most significant works of philosophy published in the late twentieth century. Paul Ricoeur's study of the intertwining of time and narrative proposes and examines the possibility that narrative could remedy a fatal deficiency in any purely phenomenological approach. He analysed both literary and historical writing, from Proust to Braudel, as well as key figures in the history of philosophy: Aristotle, Augustine, Kant, Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger. His own recognition of his limited success in expunging aporia opens onto the positive discovery of the importance of narrative identity, on which Ricoeur writes here. Other contributors take up a range of different topics: Tracing Ricoeur's own philosophical trajectory; reflexively applying the narrative approach to philosophy, or to his own text; reconstructing his dialectic of sedimentati and tradition. An essential companion to Time and Narrative , this collection also provides an excellent introduction to Ricoeur's later work and to contemporary works in philosophical hermeneutics.

The Pied Piper

The Pied Piper

Author: David Wood, Dave Arthur, Toni Arthur Format: Paperback Release Date: 01/07/1991

The Pied Piper is based on the traditional tale made famous by Robert Browning, and uses much of Browning's poem. This adaptation has the Piper making his first appearance as a modern busker, delighting the children with his music. Their parents, though, are not so delighted and soon put a stop to the energetic dancing, telling the children and the busker that music has been banned on this street for hundreds of years. The children ask why. In reply, the townsfolk act out the story of the Pied Piper, playing their medieval counterparts and involving the children and the busker as the Piper. But when the tale is told, the Piper once again enchants the children with his music, and the horrified townsfolk suddenly realise that he has come back to claim his fee, refused to him all those years ago. All ends happily, however, for it seems that, consumed by guilt, the medieval townsfolk put aside the thousand gilders, just in case the Piper should ever return. The Piper accepts his fee, and frees Hamelin from his curse at long last.
