University of Newcastle PhD candidate and University Fellow Damien Linnane's first book, a novel titled Scarred (Tenth Street Press, 2019), was written by hand while he was in prison. After his novel was completed, he used the rest of his sentence to teach himself to draw, and in 2021, illustrated the book This is Ear Hustle under a contract with Penguin Random House US. Damien's PhD, focusing on health issues in custody, is motivated by his lived experience of being denied mental health or disability treatment in prison despite repeated requests for it, one of many issues that are discussed in his memoir.
