Auszug: "e;Gott und Luzifer, jeder auf seinem Thron, von Engeln umringt. Gott, ein Greis mit harten, fast boshaften Mienen, langem, weiem Bart und kleinen Hornern wie der Moses Michel Angelos. Luzifer, jung und schon, mit Zugen von Prometheus, Apollo und Christus; von weier, leuchtender Gesichtsfarbe; mit flammenden Augen und weien Zahnen. Um das Haupt eine Strahlenkrone. Gott Genug der Untatigkeit, die unsere Krafte verzehrt! Bewegung ins All! Noch einmal will ich zu schaffen wagen. Mag ich, milingt's, mich verlieren und unter die namenlose Menge versinken. Seht hin! da unten, zwischen Mars und Venus, liegen noch einige tausend Kilometer meines Reiches brach. Da will ich eine neue Welt schaffen: Aus Nichts soll sie entstehen und in Nichts einst wieder zuruckkehren. Die Geschopfe, die da leben werden, sollen sich Gotter dunken wie wir, und ihre Kampfe und Uberhebungen sollen in uns vortreffliche Zuschauer finden. Die Welt der Narrheit sei ihr Name. Was meint mein Bruder Luzifer dazu, der mit mir dieses Reich im Suden der Milchstrae teilt?"e;

Twelve Major Plays

Twelve Major Plays

Author: August Strindberg Format: Hardback Release Date: 25/09/2017

August Strindberg is one of the founders of the modern theater. George Bernard Shaw considered him the only genuinely Shakespearian modern dramatist, Sean O'Casey called him the greatest of them all. And to Eugene O'Neill he was the greatest interpreter in the theater of the characteristic spiritual conflicts of our lives today. Twelve Major Plays includes the most famous and most characteristic Strindberg plays. This selection is particularly interesting in its depiction of the great range of Strindberg's moods and styles, from naturalism to expressionism, from ironic comedy to bitter tragedy. It displays his great gift for symbolic, mystical verse as well as his command of dramatic prose. In issues of sex and gender, Strindberg anticipated the modern temperament in society and drama alike. These translations gave American readers their first opportunity to know the true genius of Strindberg. Most previous versions in English had been based on existing German translations. Elizabeth Sprigge's unique achievement was to render the original Swedish texts into English that is at once fluent and accurate and that captures the full vigor and impact of the original plays.

The Defence of a Madman

The Defence of a Madman

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback Release Date: 29/09/2014

This autobiographical novel is based on Strindberg's life in the 1870s and 1880s, and focuses on his marriage to Siri von Essen. It purports to be a vehicle for explaining to himself his role in the relationship from its ecstatic beginnings to its catastrophic conclusion. Strindberg was writing at the time of the modern women's movement and the intense Nordic debate on sexual morality, and the novel echoes on an anguished personal level the theme of the battle of the sexes. It is one of his many and varied attempts to write his own life, to use himself as raw material. The novel was written in French and published as Le Plaidoyer d'un Fou in 1895. However, the French editor had made radical alterations to Strindberg's text - how radical was not discovered until 1973, when the original manuscript came to light. Previous translations into English have been made from the published French version or the Swedish translation of it; this is the first translation of Strindberg's original text.

August Strindberg's One-Act Plays A Selection

August Strindberg's One-Act Plays A Selection

Author: August Strindberg, Agnes Broome Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 08/10/2012

To most English-language readers and theatre goers, Strindberg is mainly known for naturalistic plays such as 'Miss Julie' and 'The Father', but the dramatic production of Sweden's national playwright is infinitely richer and more extensive than these would suggest. This volume presents four of Strindberg's lesser known one act plays, 'The Bond', 'Facing Death', 'The Outlaw' and 'Simoom', written between 1871 and 1892, which showcase Strindberg's remarkable range. 'The Bond' and 'Facing Death', which fall at the end of the time span, are familiarly naturalistic plays set in contemporary European settings which demonstrate Strindberg's provocative engagement with contentious issues of his day. The early experiment 'The Outlaw', however, takes place in the frigid landscapes of the Viking north, drawing heavily on the style of Icelandic sagas. In Simoom, written in 1889, a practically gothic narrative transports us to the scorching deserts of French colonised Algeria, allowing us to observe the beginnings of Strindberg's experimental, mystical phase which culminated in 'A Dream Play'. Different as the four plays are, however, when read together they form a thematic unity, revealing the beating heart of Strindberg's creativity, the issue at the core of his writing: love as a war eternally waged man and woman, husband and wife, children and parents and individuals and society. The four plays were translated from the Swedish by Agnes Broome, Anna Holmwood, John K Mitchinson, Mathelinda Nabugodi, Anna Tebelius and Nichola Smalley.

The People of Hemso

The People of Hemso

Author: August Strindberg, Peter Graves Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 08/10/2012

August Strindberg (1849-1912, Sweden's internationally recognised dramatist, was an astonishingly prolific all-rounder. The new National Edition of his works will run to seventy-two volumes: he was a writer of novels, short stories, essays, journalism and satire, he experimented with early photography, and in recent years his paintings have achieved the recognition they deserve. His novel 'The People of Hemso' (1887) will come as a surprise to most English-language readers, used as they are to seeing the bitter controversialist of plays like 'The Father' and 'Miss Julie' or the seeker for cosmic meaning and reconciliation of those mysterious later dream plays 'To Damascus' and 'A Dream Play'. This novel, a tragicomic story of lust, love and death among the fishermen and farmers of the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago, reveals a very different Strindberg. The vigour and humour of the narration, as well as its cinematic qualities, are such that we witness a great series of peopled panoramas in which place and time and character are somehow simultaneously specific and archetypical, and we leave the novel with memories of grand landscapes and spirited scenes. In a recent essay Ludvig Rasmusson wrote: 'For me, 'The People of Hemso' is the Great Swedish Novel, just as ...The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn [is] the Great American Novel'. His comparison is an apt one: if the Mississippi becomes the quintessence of America, the island of Hemso and the archipelago become the quintessence of Sweden.

Road to Damascus

Road to Damascus

Author: August Strindberg Format: eBook Release Date: 19/06/2012

August Strindberg's classic trilogy of plays entitled To Damascus (also known as The Road to Damascus) is known as his greatest work.A very complex and thought provoking play series, it follows the conversations between two characters: the Stranger and the Lady.An excerpt from the Introduction:The Road to Damascus might be termed a marriage drama, a mystery drama, or a drama of penance and conversion, according as preponderance is given to one or other of its characteristics. The question then arises: what was it in the drama which was of deepest significance to the author himself? The answer is to be found in the title, with its allusion to the narrative in the Acts of the Apostles of the journey of Saul, the persecutor, the scoffer, who, on his way to Damascus, had an awe-inspiring vision, which converted Saul, the hater of Christ, into Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles. Strindberg's drama describes the progress of the author right up to his conversion, shows how stage by stage he relinquishes worldly things, scientific renown, and above all woman, and finally, when nothing more binds him to this world, takes the vows of a monk and enters a monastery where no dogmas or theology, but only broadminded humanity and resignation hold sway. What, however, in an inner sense, distinguishes Strindberg's drama from the Bible narrative is that the conversion itself - although what leads up to it is convincingly described, both logically and psychologically - does not bear the character of a final and irrevocable decision, but on the contrary is depicted with a certain hesitancy and uncertainty. THE STRANGER'S entry into the monastery consequently gives the impression of being a piece of logical construction; the author's heart is not wholly in it. From Strindberg's later works it also becomes evident that his severe crisis had undoubtedly led to a complete reformation in that it definitely caused him to turn from worldly things, of which indeed he had tasted to the full, towards matters divine. But this did not mean that then and there he accepted some specific religion, whether Christian or other. One would undoubtedly come nearest to the author's own interpretation in this respect by characterising The Road to Damascus not as a drama of conversion, but as a drama of struggle, the story of a restless, arduous pilgrimage through the chimeras of the world towards the border beyond which eternity stretches in solemn peace, symbolised in the drama by a mountain, the peaks of which reach high above the clouds.

The stormy personal life of the great Swedish dramatist August Strindberg was punctuated with duels between the sexes, with ruthless, aggressive women usurping the supposedly male prerogative of decision-making and leadership. More than in any of his other plays, Strindberg explores this theme in depth in The Father. In exploring the emotionally charged battle of the sexes and the clashes between scientific and religious convictions, The Father vividly delineates the essential quality of a man’s relationship with his wife and his daughter. The problem of paternity, trivial at the outset, develops into marital upheaval and a no-holds-barred struggle between man and woman.Widely regarded as one of Strindberg's best literary efforts, The Father remains one of the most gripping psychological dramas of the theater.

Miss Julie

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 11/04/2012

Written in a fortnight and often regarded as Strindberg's masterpiece, Miss Julie is shocking in subject-matter, revolutionary in technique, and was fiercely attacked on publication for immorality. Sweden, 1894. Midsummer night's celebrations are in full swing but the Count's daughter, the beautiful and imperious Miss Julie, feels trapped and alone. Downstairs in the servants' kitchen, handsome and rebellious footman Jean is feeling restless. When they meet a passion is ignited that soon spirals out of control. Strindberg's masterpiece caused a scandal when first produced - and has been hugely popular ever since - for its viscerally honest portrait of the class system and human sexuality. The conflict between sexual passion and social position is presented in Miss Julie with startling modernity. The play's premiere at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance. Miss Julie has since become one of Strindberg's most popular and frequently performed plays. This new version by highly-acclaimed playwright and translator David Eldridge is contemporary but faithful, and combines accessibility with fluency.

In Miss Julie, a willful young aristocrat, whose perverse nature has already driven her fiancé to break off their engagement, pursues and effectively seduces her father's valet during the course of a Midsummer's Eve celebration. The progress of that seduction and the play's stunning denouement shocked Swedish audiences who first attended the play in 1889.Despite its controversial debut, this now-classic drama, inspired by the new ideas of naturalism and psychology that swept Europe in the late 19th century, helped to shape modern theater, and remains one of the most potent-and most frequently performed-of modern plays. The full text of Miss Julie is reprinted here as translated by Edwin Björkman, complete with Strindberg's critical preface to the play, considered by many to be one of the most important manifestos in theater history.

In the same year, 1899, he produced three of his finest historical dramas: The Saga of the Folkungs, Gustavus Vasa, and Eric XIV. Just before, he had finished Advent, which he described as A Mystery, and which was published together with There Are Crimes and Crimes under the common title of In a Higher Court. Back of these dramas lay his strange confessional works, Inferno and Legends, and the first two parts of his autobiographical dream-play, Toward Damascus - all of which were finished between May, 1897, and some time in the latter part of 1898. And back of these again lay that period of mental crisis, when, at Paris, in 1895 and 1896, he strove to make gold by the transmutation of baser metals, while at the same time his spirit was travelling through all the seven hells in its search for the heaven promised by the great mystics of the past.

August Strindberg: Selected Essays

August Strindberg: Selected Essays

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 14/12/2006

This is a fully edited translation of a series of essays by the great Swedish dramatist August Strindberg. The essays, edited and translated by Michael Robinson, have been selected for the light they shed, both directly and indirectly, on Strindberg's contribution to the European theatre, firstly in such masterpieces of psychological realism as The Father and Miss Julie, and subsequently in those works, including A Dream Play and The Ghost Sonata, with which he largely established a basis for theatrical modernism. Together with the accompanying notes and commentary, these essays on psychology, history, painting, natural history and alchemy as well as the theatre, help to clarify the multifaceted nature of Strindberg's project. Idiosyncratic and lively, they offer crucial insights into the intellectual history of the late nineteenth century, while their personal nature draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the writer and his wide range of interests.

The Father

The Father

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 07/09/2006

Written in 1887, the year before Strindberg's most famous play, Miss Julie , and only a few years after Ibsen's A Doll's House , The Father deals with the same theme of male versus female domination. Laura and Adolf have a daughter, Bertha, whom they both wish to claim as their own. Laura tells Adolf that (in those pre-DNA days) he cannot be sure he is her real father. Wrestling with this thought, driven mad by Laura's malice, and finally betrayed even by Bertha, Adolf is last seen being strapped into a straitjacket...This extraordinarily modern take on the eternal battle of the sexes combines naturalism and expressionism to startling effect, so that the audience never quite knows what is real, what is the projection of the characters' highly pitched emotions. Mike Poulton, the author of this spiky new version, comes to Strindberg via enormous successes with Turgenev, Chekhov, Ibsen and, very recently, with Schiller's Don Carlos and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales . The Father premieres at Chichester in September 2006 with a no-doubt-starry cast yet to be announced.

Julie A version of Miss Julie

Julie A version of Miss Julie

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 07/09/2006

In the oppressive heat of Midsummer's Eve, Julie, daughter of the lord, is drawn into a dangerous tryst with her father's butler. As the night wears on, the couple, from opposite ends of the social spectrum, dance, flirt and fight towards an explosive conclusion that will shake the existing order to its core. Zinnie Harris's new version of Strindberg's nineteenth-century masterpiece, Miss Julie, relocates the play to central Scotland between the wars. The play premiered at Platform, Easterhouse, in a National Theatre of Scotland Ensemble production in September 2006.

Miss Julie

Miss Julie

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 04/05/2006

Miss Julie (1888), written in a fortnight, was regarded by Strindberg as his masterpiece, 'the first naturalistic tragedy of the Swedish drama'. Shocking in subject-matter, revolutionary in technique, it was fiercely attacked on publication for immorality. On Midsummer Eve, Miss Julie, the daughter of a count, sleeps with her father's valet, Jean. The subsequent conflict between sexual passion and social position, which leads to her suicide, is presented with startling modernity. The play's premiere at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance. Miss Julie has since become one of Strindberg's most popular and frequently performed plays. Commentary and notes by David Thomas and Jo Taylor.

Easter

Easter

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback Release Date: 01/03/2005

The Heyst family live under a shadow. The father is in prison for embezzlement and the daughter, Eleanora, has been committed to an asylum. Mrs Heyst and her son Elis live from day to day on the edge of collapse. They fear that they are on the brink of ruin, but as the snow melts and a single daffodil appears, Easter Eve brings them hope, joy and mercy. Passionate and powerful, Easter is August Strindberg's most tender play and perhaps closest to his heart. It is a play about forgiveness and the coincidences of life from one of the world's master dramatists.

The Dance of Death

The Dance of Death

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 14/01/2005

Alongside Tate Modern's big Strindberg Exhibition this Spring - his two most famous plays are published in the popular pocket-format Drama Classics series Recently revived in the West End with Ian McKellen and Frances de la Tour, The Dance of Death is Strindberg's chilling anatomy of a marriage - in which the two partners duel with each other until one is utterly defeated. Written in 1902 and consisting of two full-length plays, both are included in this volume, though usually only the first is staged.

A Dream Play

A Dream Play

Author: August Strindberg, Caryl Churchill Format: Hardback Release Date: 13/01/2005

Following the logic of a dream, in which characters merge into each other, locations change in an instant and a locked door becomes an obsessively recurrent image, Strindberg's A Dream Play written in 1902 is an amazing amalgam of Freud, Alice's Wonderland and Strindberg's own private symbolism. As Strindberg himself said, he wanted to capture the inconsistent yet ostensibly logical structure of a dream. Everything can happen...Time and Place do not exist. Caryl Churchill's spare and resonant new version will premiere at the National Theatre in repertoire from mid-February 2005, coinciding with the big Strindberg exhibition at Tate Modern.

With roots in psychological naturalism, he was nevertheless fascinated by symbols, dreams and fantasies. His later plays anticipated and paved the way for surrealistic, expressionistic and absurdist theatre. This, the second volume of the plays of Strindberg publishedby Oberon Books, contains the Chamber Plays (The Storm, The Burned Site, The Ghost Sonata, The Pelican, The Black Glove) - some of the most characteristic and original of Strindberg's works - as well as Strindberg's last great play, written shortly before his death. This is The Great Highway, one of the expressionist masterpiecesof modern drama. A man walks the Alps encountering feuding millers, a hermit, a murderer, a Japanese man resolved to burn himself to death to cleanse him of his existence, and a little girl waiting for her father to return. In the end he seeks to justify his life to an unknown woman whilst coughing blood into his handkerchief. The Tempter himself arrives with an offer from the Grand Duke...Gregory Motton's translations combine an unprecedented faithfulness to Strindberg's original texts with the natural fluency of one of our most linguistically able contemporary playwrights.

The Roofing Ceremony and The Silver Lake

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/12/2000

The Roofing Ceremony is a powerful, ultimately hopeful short novel that will revise the narrow view of August Strindberg as merely a misogynist and the gloomiest of Scandinavian writers. This novel has an inwardness, irreducibly and complexly human, that looks back to Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich and forward to Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape. Published in Sweden in 1906 and never before translated into English, The Roofing Ceremony (Taklagsoel) anticipates in its turbulent intensity the chamber plays Strindberg was soon to write. It is about a dying man, once an explorer but now a museum curator, who reviews his tumultuous life aloud as he drifts in and out of a morphine-induced sleep. Sometimes fragmentary, sometimes episodic, this impressionistic monologue builds up a vivid and nuanced portrait of the curator and his estranged wife, chronicling passionately but also humorously the descent of their marriage from island idyll into bitter comedy into tragic estrangement. Strindberg anticipated in this work the modern psychological novel and the technique of stream-of-consciousness. A curious, brief narrative Strindberg meant to incorporate into The Roofing Ceremony but never did is also included in this book, as well as a story called The Silver Lake written in 1898, which also appears in English for the first time. A museum curator, summering on a Baltic island, seeks out a forbidden lake and shares its enchantment with his wife and children. But his marriage is doomed, and when he returns to the lake alone, its mystery turns sinister.

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/10/2000

Includes the plays Miss Julie, The Father, The Comrades and Creditors Miss Julie is Strindberg's best known play, a naturalistic drama about an affair which involves a brutal struggle for ascendancy between the two sexes and two classes. The Father, an almost entirely one-sided rage against the power of women over men, is also a plea for the feminine side of a man's nature. The Comrades portrays artists living in Paris in what they consider to be a modern 'bohemian' marriage. In Creditors, Strindberg is in rare comic form, describing how a woman's ex-husband gains her new husband's confidences, only to destroy him and his faith in his wife in one afternoon.

August Strindberg: Selected Essays

Author: August Strindberg Format: Hardback Release Date: 28/10/1996

Three Plays

Three Plays

Author: August Strindberg Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 31/12/1963

The three plays in this volume focus on the tumultuous relationships between men and women, whether they are father and daughter, brother and sister or lovers. Miss Julie is a ruthlessly realistic depiction of an upper class woman's seduction of a servant, emphasizing the differences and the antagonism between them. In The Father a man is brought to madness and driven out of his home by the suspicion that his daughter is not his own child, while Easter centres on a family in need of redemption for its sins and suffering, finding forgiveness at a season of rebirth. Strindberg's acute psychological analysis and his dramatization of naked emotion within a naturalistic domestic setting make him one of the great innovators of the modern theatre.
