A Storm of Swords

A Storm of Swords

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Hardback Release Date: 18/05/2017

The third novel in the epic A Song of Fire and Ice series has been split into two books; the first part Steel and Snow continues to reinforce the reputation of this masterful conjurer of the written word.  Martin has the wonderful ability to make a living breathing world without a whiff of the fanciful; yet dragons fly and the Others are a terrifying menace that the majority of the realm can not even begin to imagine. You should be used to the unpredictable twists and turns that Martin is so skilful at composing, however he still has the ability to stun with his sudden change of pace.  You may well find yourself begging the author not to slaughter your favourites (who are not necessarily the most admirable) as surprises continue apace and characters you previously loathed with good reason, start to reveal hidden depths. Steel and Snow feels as though a towering and precarious set of building blocks is being deftly constructed, just in time to crash to the ground during the second part of a Storm of Swords; Blood and Gold.

Wild Cards: High Stakes

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Paperback Release Date: 04/05/2017

Since an alien virus swept through New York City, the world has changed. Those who survived were divided. The lucky ones transformed into aces - heroes gifted with extraordinary powers. The rest became jokers, tragically mutated and cursed with terrifying abilities. These days, the hard-bitten police of Manhattan's notorious Fifth Precinct - 'Fort Freak' - specialise in a very particular kind of criminal ...Officer Francis Black, vigilante joker Marcus 'The Infamous Black Tongue' Morgan and ace thief Mollie 'Tesseract' Steunenberg are stuck in Kazakhstan. The coldblooded Baba Yaga is forcing jokers into an illegal fighting ring, but her hidden agenda is much darker: her fighters' deaths serve to placate a vicious monster from another dimension. And when the last line of defence against this world weakens, all hell will break loose - literally. The Committee in New York sends a team of aces to investigate. One by one, each falls victim to evil forces - including the dark impulses within themselves. Only the most unlikely of heroes stands a chance of saving the world before utter chaos erupts. Edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin, High Stakes features the writing talents of Melinda M. Snodgrass, John J. Miller, David Anthony Durham, Caroline Spector, Stephen Leigh and Ian Tregillis. Now in development for TV: rights to develop Wild Cards for TV have been acquired by Universal Cable Productions, the team that brought you The Magicians and Mr. Robot, with the co-editor of Wild Cards, Melinda Snodgrass as executive producer.

Rogues is a meaty feast of a book, stuffed full of fabulous stories from some of the best authors around (George RR Martin and Neil Gaiman to name just a couple). This isn't just about science fiction and fantasy either, there’s some great mainstream contemporary works on show too. There are twenty one stories, proper weighty stories, full of content and some of the most interesting characters around. Once you start reading, it’s difficult to stop as the next story gives a siren call to dive straight in.  So…if you've always loved to hiss and boo at an irresistibly wicked and sometimes charming villain, this is the perfect book for you.

Wild Cards: Dead Man's Hand

Wild Cards: Dead Man's Hand

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Paperback Release Date: 14/08/2014

A wonderfully old-fashioned whodunnit stuffed full however, (as you would expect) with quirks, peculiarities and eccentricity.  In a departure from the previous six Wild Card novels just two authors have written Dead Man’s Hand; George RR Martin and John J Miller. This allows a real insight into two of the more complex characters; astute private detective and ace Jay Ackroyd and the wonderfully enigmatic nat Daniel Brennan. Taking place in the same time period as Ace in the Hole, the majority of the focus for this remains in and around the gloriously freaky Jokertown, as Ackroyd and Brennan try to solve a murder from different angles. Slide a step to the side from the preceding books and enjoy this well crafted and stimulating read. You will understand so much more of the Wild Card world if you start at the beginning of the series with ‘Wild Cards’. You do not have to be a science fiction and fantasy buff to enjoy these books. George RR Martin has proven his more mainstream appeal with the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series adapted from his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. Recommended for anyone who appreciates the unusual and bizarre side of life.

Wild Cards: Ace in the Hole

Wild Cards: Ace in the Hole

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Paperback Release Date: 10/07/2014

This is a classic slow burner, it gradually gets it’s hooks into you and then rockets along to a cracking ending.  Set over a period of a week during the American Presidency campaign in July 1988, there is a definite political overtone, but you don't have to know how the system works to enjoy this novel. Feeling more focused and directly featuring less characters allows the storyline of Gregg Hartmann, hero to the Jokers (but a hidden murdering nightmare of an ace) to take centre stage. You may initially miss the brawling turbulence of the wider range of characters from previous books, but hang on in there as it gets good!  The Closing Credits at the end of the book is an interesting page as it features a list of characters and their creators. Dr Tachyon,  created by Melinda M Snodgrass has assisted Martin with the editing of ‘Ace in the Hole’. Wild Cards: Aces Abroad

Wild Cards: Aces Abroad

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/05/2014

A new ‘triad’ of books begins within the ‘Wild Cards’ series; set during 1986 and 1987, Nats, Jokers and Aces take a sponsored tour around the world to investigate the treatment of victims of the wild card virus. Focusing on particular endeavours, we hear voices clamouring to be heard in one country through to aspirations for total world domination in another. On board are a range of favourite characters and we are also introduced to some compelling and sometimes abhorrent new antagonists. The joy of this series is that although the Wild Card Virus is fantasy at it’s best, the characters are so realistic that it appears resoundingly normal and rational; villains are capable of sporadic moments of gentleness and idols can fall resoundingly off of their pedestals. There is a slightly disjointed feel to this novel initially, possibly because the cohesive setting of New York is left far behind and some serious country hopping takes place. As you get used to the differences however and the plot and pace builds, the different authors bring out the best (or worst) in their characters, so hang on to the fuselage of the ‘Stacked Deck’ and settle in for a wild ride. Although you could potentially read this as a stand alone story, you will understand so much more of the Wild Card world if you start at the beginning of the series.

A Game of Thrones: Graphic Novel, Volume Three

A Game of Thrones: Graphic Novel, Volume Three

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Hardback Release Date: 13/03/2014

George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy masterwork A Game of Thrones is brought to life in the pages of this full-colour graphic novel. This is the third volume in what is sure to be one of the most coveted collaborations of the year. Now a major Sky Atlantic TV series from HBO, featuring a stellar cast. When dealing with a masterpiece, only the best will do. That's why writer Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson were chosen to adapt George R. R. Martin's beloved fantasy classic A Game of Thrones as a graphic novel. And as anyone who has read the previous two collected volumes of the ongoing series can attest, the result has been a stunning tour de force faithful in every respect to its brilliant original. In King's Landing, Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell-the Hand of King Robert Baratheon-is surrounded by enemies. Some are openly declared, such as Ser Jaime Lannister and his sister, Queen Cersei. Others are hidden in the shadows. Still others wear the smiling mask of friends. But all are deadly, as Eddard is about to discover. Nor is the enmity between Eddard and the Lannister siblings the sole source of friction between these powerful noble families. For Tyrion Lannister, the Imp-whose stunted, twisted body houses the mind of a genius-has but lately won his freedom from Lady Catelyn Stark, Eddard's wife, who had accused him of attempting to murder her youngest son, Brandon. Now he seeks out his father, his restless thoughts bent on revenge. Far to the north, the bastard Jon Snow, newly sworn to the Night's Watch, takes the first faltering steps toward a destiny stranger than he could ever dream-a destiny that will bring him face-to-face with unspeakable horrors from beyond the edge of the world. While across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen, wed to the great Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo, and pregnant with his child-a son prophesied to conquer the world-will see her own destiny take an unforeseen turn.

The return of the famous shared-world superhero books created and edited by George R. R. Martin, author of A GAME OF THRONES In 1946, an alien virus that rewrites human DNA was accidentally unleashed in the skies over New York City. It killed 90% of those it infected. Nine percent survived, mutated into tragically deformed creatures. And one percent gained superpowers. The Wild Cards shared-universe series, created and edited by bestseller George R. R. Martin (called 'the American Tolkien' by TIME), is the tale of the history of the world since then - and of the heroes among the one percent. Now, in the latest Wild Cards mosaic novel, we get to know the hard-bitten world of Manhattan's Fifth Precinct - or 'Fort Freak' - as cops and malefactors alike call the cop-shop where every other desk sergeant, detective, and patrol officer is more than human. Featuring original work by writers such as Cherie Priest, author of the bestselling BONESHAKER; Paul Cornell, HUGO-nominated comic book and DOCTOR WHO writer; David Anthony Durham, winner of 2009's JOHN W. Wild Cards: Suicide Kings

Author: George R. R. Martin Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 08/08/2013

The return of the famous shared-world superhero books created and edited by George R. R. Martin, author of A GAME OF THRONES The heart of the world is bleeding, the People's Paradise of Africa is having it out with the Caliphate, and the Sudan is a charnel house. The powers-that-be aren't doing anything. The UN might set up a committee. But the time for action is now. So, one by one, the aces join the fight, each for their own reasons ... The Wild Card virus kills 90 percent of the folks who catch it, but those who survive gain special powers. Some become grotesque mutants like the half-man, half-rhino Denys Finch. They're the jokers. Some get trivial powers. They're deuces. And some - the aces - develop wild superpowers. Like Bubbles, who can absorb any amount of energy. Or Bugsy, who can turn his body into wasps. Or Double Helix, the shape-changing, teleporting assassin. And Tom Weathers, the Radical. The strongest, most versatile of the aces - he can fly, he's strong enough to rip the turret off a tank, he can shoot heat rays from his hands ... but his greatest strength is his total conviction in the rightness of his cause. Whatever the cause is at the moment. At this particular moment, he's found a way to get more aces for the People's Paradise. Lots more aces. And that's where the trouble starts ...

At the United Nations, veteran ace John Fortune has assembled a team of young heroes, known as The Committee, to assist at trouble spots around the world - including an invasion of zombies in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, a freak nuclear explosion in a small Texas town, and a fateful showdown with the forces of the oil-rich Islamic caliphate in the Middle East. The Wild Cards series reboots with new authors, new heroes and a new direction In 1946, an alien virus that rewrites human DNA was accidentally unleashed in the skies over New York City. It killed ninety percent of those it infected. Nine percent of those who survived mutated into tragically deformed creatures. And one percent gained superpowers. The Wild Cards shared-universe series, created and edited since 1987 by NEW YORK TIMES No.1 bestseller George R.R. Martin along with Melinda Snodgrass, is the tale of the history of the world since then - and of the heroes among that one percent. Now it is time for a new generation of heroes - and writers - to pick up the baton. Twenty-eight extraordinary people - Aces, people who have contracted the deadly Wild Cards virus and lived - sign onto a reality TV show. These young heroes have never really been heroic, but each has a superhuman skill. Initially divided up into four suits while competing in staged contests as only LA-LA land could dream up, the losers are voted off the show until, at last, the greatest American Hero will be left standing. As the weeks go by, those remaining in the competition are stunned by sickening events in the Middle East. Their inane challenges look silly when compared to those unpowered people risking their lives.
