Author: P.G. Wodehouse Format: eBook Release Date: 06/06/2014

PG Wodehouse was born as Pelham Grenville Wodehouse on 15th October, 1881 in Guildford, south east England to distinguished parents who were visiting the UK from Hong Kong where his father was a judge. The Wodehouse family had aristocratic roots in their family home in Norfolk but PG was never to live in the county. Instead from the age of 3 he was returned from Hong Kong to be educated at different schools in the UK and until the age of 15 hardly saw his parents. He had a nanny, spent summers with various aunts and became close to one of his 3 brothers. There was still a void in his life which was filled by writing and resulted in his editing his college magazine at Dulwich College where he further flourished in music, theatre and sports. Although intending to follow his brother to Oxford University, his father's finance faltered so instead his father found him a position in what was to become HSBC bank. Whilst at the bank he recounted some of his experiences in a publication which started his life as a journalist and contributor to magazines that led to his making a name for himself in musical comedies resulting in the collaboration with Cole Porter in 1934 on Anything Goes, journalism and a writer of short stories. His wonderful characterisation of the English upper classes combined with his mastery of prose left a lasting legacy most notably in his series of the humorous and sometimes hilarious Jeeves and Wooster stories that are at the pinnacle of comic writing and continue to be widely read and enjoyed. PG Wodehouse spent much of his life in France and the US, mainly New York, where he died on 14th February 1975. Despite controversy over his possible Nazi sympathies he was awarded the KBE, albeit shortly before his death when Madam Tussaud's also had a waxwork made of him.

The Inimitable JeevesA classic collection of stories featuring some of the funniest episodes in the life of Bertie Wooster, gentleman, and Jeeves, his gentleman's gentleman - in which Bertie's terrifying Aunt Agatha stalks the pages, seeking whom she may devour, while Bertie's friend Bingo Little falls in love with seven different girls in succession (including the bestselling romantic novelist Rosie M. Banks). And Bertie, with Jeeves's help, hopes to evade the clutches of the terrifying Honoria Glossop. At its heart is one of Wodehouse's most delicious stories, 'The Great Sermon Handicap'.Carry On, JeevesThese marvellous stories introduce us to Jeeves, whose first ever duty is to cure Bertie's raging hangover ('If you would drink this, sir... it is a little preparation of my own invention. It is the Worcester Sauce that gives it its colour. The raw egg makes it nutritious. The red pepper gives it its bite. Gentlemen have told me they have found it extremely invigorating after a late evening.')And from that moment, one of the funniest, sharpest and most touching partnerships in English literature never looks back...Very Good, Jeeves:An outstanding collection of Jeeves stories, every one a winner, in which Jeeves endeavours to give satisfaction:By saving a grumpy cabinet minister from being marooned and attacked by a swan - in the process saving Bertie Wooster from his impending doom...By rescuing Bingo Little and Tuppy Glossop from the soup (twice each)...By arranging rather too many performances of the song 'Sonny Boy' to a not very appreciative audience...And by a variety of other sparkling stratagems that should reduce you to helpless laughter.

Thank You, JeevesThank You, Jeeves is the first novel to feature the incomparable valet Jeeves and his hapless charge Bertie Wooster - and you've hardly started to turn the pages when he resigns over Bertie's dedicated but somewhat untuneful playing of the banjo. In high dudgeon, Bertie disappears to the country as a guest of his chum Chuffy - only to find his peace shattered by the arrival of his ex-fianc e Pauline Stoker, her formidable father and the eminent loony-doctor Sir Roderick Glossop. When Chuffy falls in love with Pauline and Bertie seems to be caught in flagrante, a situation boils up which only Jeeves (whether employed or not) can simmer down...Right-Ho, JeevesGussie Fink-Nottle's knowledge of the common newt is unparalleled. Drop him in a pond of newts and his behaviour will be exemplary, but introduce him to a girl and watch him turn pink, yammer, and suddenly stampede for great open spaces. Even with Madeline Bassett, who feels that the stars are God's daisy chain, his tongue is tied in reef-knots. And his chum Tuppy Glossop isn't getting on much better with Madeline's delectable friend Angela. With so many broken hearts lying about him, Bertie Wooster can't sit idly by. The happiness of a pal - two pals, in fact - is at stake. But somehow Bertie's best-laid plans land everyone in the soup, and so it's just as well that Jeeves is ever at hand to apply his bulging brains to the problems of young love. The Code of the WoostersWhen Bertie Wooster goes to Totleigh Towers to pour oil on the troubled waters of a lovers' breach between Madeline Bassett and Gussie Fink-Nottle, he isn't expecting to see Aunt Dahlia there - nor to be instructed by her to steal some silver. But purloining the antique cow creamer from under the baleful nose of Sir Watkyn Bassett is the least of Bertie's tasks. He has to restore true love to both Madeline and Gussie and to the Revd Stinker Pinker and Stiffy Byng - and confound the insane ambitions of would-be Dictator Roderick Spode and his Black Shorts. It's a situation that only Jeeves can unravel...

Jeeves Joy In The Morning

Jeeves Joy In The Morning

Author: P.G. Wodehouse Format: eBook Release Date: 05/06/2006

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation starring Michael Hordern as Jeeves and Richard Briers as Wooster. Steeple Bumphleigh is the sort of picturesque place where you can't throw a brick without hitting a honeysuckled cottage or beaning an apple-cheeked villager. But for Bertie Wooster, it is a place to be avoided, containing not only the appalling Aunt Agatha but also her husband, the terrifying Lord Worplesdon. So when a certain amount of familial arm-twisting is applied, Bertie heads for the sticks in fear and trepidation despite the support of the irreplaceable Jeeves. Still, there are good deeds to be done, like extricating 'Stilton' Cheesewright from the clutches of Florence Craye, a girl from whom Bertie himself only escaped by the slimmest of cat's whiskers. But even Bertie is hideously unaware of the perils which lie in wait before the (accidentally) happiest of endings.

There are good eggs present, such as Gussie Fink-Nottle and the Rev. 'Stinker' Pinker. But there also is Sir Watkyn Bassett J.P., enemy of all the Woosters hold dear, to say nothing of his daughter Madeline and Roderick Spode, now raised to the peerage. And Major Brabazon Plank, the peppery explorer, who wants to lay Bertie out cold.Thank goodness for the intervention of Chief Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard - but is this gentleman all he seems?

Aunt Dahlia has lost a fortune at the gaming tables in Cannes and dare not tell Uncle Tom.
