Black Spartacus: The Epic Life of Toussaint Louverture
Brought to you by Penguin. The Haitian Revolution began in the French Caribbean colony of Saint-Domingue with a slave revolt in August 1791, and culminated a dozen years later in the proclamation of the world's first independent black state. After the abolition of slavery in 1793, Toussaint Louverture, himself a former slave, became the leader of the colony's black population, the commander of its republican army and eventually its governor. During the course of his extraordinary life he confronted some of the dominant forces of his age - slavery, settler colonialism, imperialism and racial hierarchy. Treacherously seized by Napoleon's invading army in 1802, this charismatic figure ended his days, in Wordsworth's phrase, 'the most unhappy man of men', imprisoned in a fortress in France. Black Spartacus draws on a wealth of archival material, much of it overlooked by previous biographers, to follow every step of Louverture's singular journey, from his triumphs against French, Spanish and British troops to his skilful regional diplomacy, his Machiavellian dealings with successive French colonial administrators and his bold promulgation of an autonomous Constitution. Sudhir Hazareesingh shows that Louverture developed his unique vision and leadership not solely in response to imported Enlightenment ideals and revolutionary events in Europe and the Americas, but through a hybrid heritage of fraternal slave organisations, Caribbean mysticism and African political traditions. Above all, Hazareesingh retrieves Louverture's rousing voice and force of personality, making this the most engaging, as well as the most complete, biography to date. After his death in the French fortress, Louverture became a figure of legend, a beacon for slaves across the Atlantic and for generations of European republicans and progressive figures in the Americas. He inspired the anti-slavery campaigner Frederick Douglass, the most eminent nineteenth-century African-American; his emancipatory struggle was hailed by those who defied imperial and colonial rule well into the twentieth. In the modern era, his life informed the French poet Aimé Césaire's seminal idea of négritude and has been celebrated in a remarkable range of plays, songs, novels and statues. Here, in all its drama, is the epic story of the world's first black superhero. ©Sudhir Hazareesingh 2020 (P) Penguin Audio 2020

Trump and Churchill: Defenders of Western Civilization
Trump and Churchill both fought valiantly to protect Western Civilization, and while fighting different forms of tyranny, Trump could very well be to the twenty-first century what Churchill was to the twentieth. What do Winston Churchill-the eloquent, eternally quotable wordsmith, pudgy politician of fifty years, wealthy aristocrat, war-time Prime Minister of England-and Donald Trump, the 6'4', brash, Twitter happy, political neophyte, billionaire entrepreneur-have in common? In his new book, complete with never-before-told anecdotes, bestselling author Nick Adams explores how both leaders, with seemingly nothing in common, turned their day's prevailing politics on its head. In doing so, they both endured shockingly similar battles instigated by the political establishment seeking their destruction. Trump and Churchill's unorthodox approach to both domestic and international relations has rescued Western Civilization from the brink.

Sensible Politics: Visualizing International Relations
Visual images are everywhere in international politics. But how are we to understand them? In Sensible Politics, William A. Callahan uses his expertise in theory and filmmaking to explore not only what visuals mean, but also how visuals can viscerally move and connect us in 'affective communities of sense.' The book's rich analysis of visual images (photographs, film, art) and visual artifacts (maps, veils, walls, gardens, cyberspace) shows how critical scholarship needs to push beyond issues of identity and security to appreciate the creative politics of social-ordering and world-ordering. Here 'sensible politics' isn't just sensory, but looks beyond icons and ideology to the affective politics of everyday life. It challenges our Eurocentric understanding of international politics by exploring the meaning and impact of visuals from Asia and the Middle East. Sensible Politics offers a unique approach to politics that allows us to not only think visually, but also feel visually-and creatively act visually for a multisensory appreciation of politics.

Grandstanding: The Use and Abuse of Moral Talk
We are all guilty of it. We call people terrible names in conversation or online. We vilify those with whom we disagree, and make bolder claims than we could defend. We want to be seen as taking the moral high ground not just to make a point, or move a debate forward, but to look a certain way-incensed, or compassionate, or committed to a cause. We exaggerate. In other words, we grandstand. Nowhere is this more evident than in public discourse today, and especially as it plays out across the internet. To philosophers Justin Tosi and Brandon Warmke, who have written extensively about moral grandstanding, such one-upmanship is not just annoying, but dangerous. As politics gets more and more polarized, people on both sides of the spectrum move further and further apart when they let grandstanding get in the way of engaging one another. Drawing from work in psychology, economics, and political science, and along with contemporary examples spanning the political spectrum, the authors dive deeply into why and how we grandstand. Using the analytic tools of psychology and moral philosophy, they explain what drives us to behave in this way, and what we stand to lose by taking it too far. Most importantly, they show how, by avoiding grandstanding, we can re-build a public square worth participating in.

Our democracy today is fraught with political campaigns, lobbyists, liberal media, and Fox News commentators, all using language to influence the way we think and reason about public issues. Even so, many of us believe that propaganda and manipulation aren't problems for us-not in the way they were for the totalitarian societies of the mid-twentieth century. In How Propaganda Works, Jason Stanley demonstrates that more attention needs to be paid. He examines how propaganda operates subtly, how it undermines democracy-particularly the ideals of democratic deliberation and equality-and how it has damaged democracies of the past. Focusing on the shortcomings of liberal democratic states, Stanley provides a historically grounded introduction to democratic political theory as a window into the misuse of democratic vocabulary for propaganda's selfish purposes. He lays out historical examples, such as the restructuring of the US public school system at the turn of the twentieth century, to explore how the language of democracy is sometimes used to mask an undemocratic reality. Drawing from a range of sources, he explains how the manipulative and hypocritical declaration of flawed beliefs and ideologies arises from and perpetuates inequalities in society, such as the racial injustices that commonly occur in the United States.

"It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles." How can a prince rise to power? What must he do to remain in it? What is expected of a good ruler? Which is better-to be feared or to be loved? Offering an explicit insight into the minds of a ruler, here is a practical handbook and a political treatise exploring the attainment, maintenance and utilization of political power in the Western world. It warns that if a state is not governed properly it shall collapse on the ruler. It describes the art and craft of war. It elaborates on the qualities of a prince and his prudence. It gives lessons in statesmanship and on judging the strength of principalities. The world's most influential-and controversial-treatise on politics Composed in exile and published posthumously, The Prince is Niccolò Machiavelli's legacy and the foundation of modern political theory. Drawing on his firsthand experiences as a diplomat and military commander in the Florentine Republic, Machiavelli disregards the rhetorical flourishes and sentimentality typically found in sixteenth-century mirrors for princes-guides instructing noblemen in the fine art of ruling-and gets straight to practical matters: how to eliminate rivals, when to use force, whether it is better to be loved or feared.

They have sought to popularize their views by influencing the public at large using various social channels to disseminate their ideas. Some conspiracy theories come off as seeming very credible and can get the attention of one or groups of people in a society. The way in which conspiracy theories seem borderline credible is that they involve actual and verifiable historic events and develop a conclusion from these. They use the sensibilities and popular beliefs held by people and use various social hooks to sway their opinion. So, if you want to get the insider information on the workings of conspiracy theories of the 'Q' organization then this will be the only book you'll ever need! Here's what else you'll learn: - What are conspiracy theories, how do they work, and how they spread misinformation - How are conspiracy theories structured, what are the channels they use to influence the public, how do they manipulate the psychology of the masses - What is 'Q,' how did this organization come about, who are their followers, and what do they believe in - What are the strategies used by 'Q,' which other social institutions they rely on, and which media sources do they use to gain credibility - What are the most popular conspiracies have been at the forefront of, and what are they working on right now in swaying popular public opinion - How are conspiracy theories different from conventional theories, how can the mainstream media get caught up in conspiracy theories, and how can we separate them from facts - ….. This will help us to propagate the facts and enable an upright system of governance that uses objective truths to make decisions in serving our country.

... uvm.

Restoring the American Dream: The Defining Voice in the Movement for Liberty
Restoring the American Dream is a follow up to Robert Ringer's bestselling classic. In Restoring the American Dream, Ringer continues to expose the myriad of problems created by big government (including inflation, high taxes, the energy crisis, and excessive regulation), and prescribed freedom, individualism, and opportunity as the solution. Ringer dedicated the book to 'men and women throughout the world who practice individualism and self-responsibility, who do not covet the fruits of the labor of others, [and] who respect every person's right to sovereignty over his own life.' Ringer points out many of the problems in the financial state of the government and explores the basic premise that nothing is more precious than individual rights. It is a rallying cry to a return to limited government and individual freedom.
