Thailand - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture
For many outsiders, Thailand still conjures up images of the East at its most mysterious and enchanting-a view largely formed by Hollywood films like The King and I. Never conquered by foreigners, this proud and ancient land has been shaped by Buddhism, the monarchy, and the military. Today, it is a representative democracy with a populist female prime minister and is ranked among the tiger economies of Southeast Asia. It is a manufacturing powerhouse, the world's largest rice exporter, and a tourist paradise that welcomes twenty-two million visitors a year to its beach resorts and its vibrant capital, Bangkok. Yet despite the veneer of Western modernity, the country and its people remain an enigma for many visitors, smiling and inscrutable. It conceals a unique system of personal values and attitudes, developed over centuries. You may find that Thais react to you in surprising and unexpected ways, coming as they do from a culture based on respect, status, self-control, non-confrontation, and harmony. They are also naturally generous and have a great love of fun. Culture Smart! Thailand describes how the Thai people view the world and themselves. It helps visitors become more culturally aware and better able to interact successfully with the locals. Thailand's charm lies in being different, and visitors who make an effort to understand the differences will find their stay in "The Land of Smiles" a richly rewarding experience.

Concise History of Turkey, A: The History and Legacy of Turkey from Antiquity to Today
It was not until the excavations of the 1930s that many of the relics, reliefs, and clay tablets that offer so much information about Persian life could be studied for the first time. Through archaeological remains, ancient texts, and work by a new generation of historians, a picture can today be built of this remarkable civilization and their capital city. Although the city had been destroyed, the legacy of the Persians survived, even as they mostly remain an enigma to the West and are not nearly as well understood as the Greeks, Romans, or Egyptians. In a sense, the Achaemenid Persian Empire holds some of the most enduring mysteries of ancient civilization. Of course, one of the reasons the Persians aren’t remembered like the Greeks is because of the way the Greco-Persian Wars ended. The Ancient Greeks have long been considered the forefathers of modern Western civilization, but the Golden Age of Athens and the spread of Greek influence across much of the known world only occurred due to the Greeks’ victory in two of history’s most important wars. In 491 BCE, following a successful invasion of Thrace over the Hellespont, the Persian emperor Darius sent envoys to the main Greek city-states, including Sparta and Athens, demanding tokens of earth and water as symbols of submission, but Darius didn’t exactly get the reply he sought. According to Herodotus in his famous Histories, “Xerxes however had not sent to Athens or to Sparta heralds to demand the gift of earth, and for this reason, namely because at the former time when Dareios had sent for this very purpose, the one people threw the men who made the demand into the pit and the others into a well, and bade them take from thence earth and water and bear them to the king.”

For some reason though, many live the way they feel they have to instead of the way they really want to. Maybe we are waiting for permission to chase our dreams and passions and be who we want to be. Maybe it’s just easier to stop hoping and settle for the status quo. But is it? We can live in a prison of disappointment, surrender, and excuses where we regret not doing the things we were afraid to do, or we can passionately pursue our dreams and create a fulfilling and meaningful life. You get to choose. Passport Forward tells the many exciting stories of adventure traveler Lex Latkovski and his quest to overcome obstacles, step through fears, and create a passionate and exciting life. Lex invites you to seize opportunities while you can, choose experiences over material things, and take the first step now... then keep going.
