After Meat: The Case for an Amazing, Meat-Free World
Animals make for terrible technology. The technological use of animals--making food, drugs, clothing, and cosmetics out of animal material--will cease. A cow takes over one year to grow, 'wastes' over ninety percent of what it's fed, and cannot be innovated much further. After Meat explains the fundamental limits of animal technology in terms of physics and biology. Replacement technology such as microbial fermentation will surpass those limits. Eventually, we’ll have food that is better in every way--in terms of taste, cost, nutrition, resource consumption, and ethics--because we won't use animals to produce it. Along the way, After Meat leads us through a veritable forest of adjacent topics. We wade into evolution and reductivism, broach consciousness and the Multiverse, dive into economics and policy, bounce from weather prediction to the problem of hunger to the morality of eating plants. In sum, we ineluctably conclude that our future has little room for animal technology, and that future will be better for it.

The Philosophy of Digital Entrepreneurship: What it Takes to Become Part of Digital Entrepreneurship
Digital technologies today are no longer only impacting the way individuals interact with one another and carry out their daily lives. Smartphones and applications, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and different applications and advanced technologies all allow people to connect all around the world and use their personal (handheld) technologies to provide immense benefit. Some of the greatest benefits today for personal use of digital technologies are allowing people to connect with one another via the Internet of Things (IoT), and other universal technologies. They allow for seamless connectivity across platforms, across different types of technologies, and make this connectivity accessible for more users. In addition to this, however, another critical application of digital technologies is the digitalization of business. It is something that gives businesses a competitive advantage against competitors, by simply allowing them to perform more efficiently and effectively. Much like the personal benefits of digitalization and technology, the digitalization of business—and the use of digital technology in business—it allows for businesses and employees to be very interconnected; and allows them to achieve greater efficiency in day-to-day operations and strategic goals. Other similar benefits also arise from means of greater innovation, faster communication, and greater cost-savings in various areas of business. That said, one area in particular that is benefiting tremendously from increased use of digital technologies is entrepreneurship. Digital entrepreneurship is something that, in recent years, has become more prevalent than ever. With the increase in businesses relying on eCommerce, businesses using digital technologies to support essential operations, and entrepreneurs increasingly creating digital-only businesses—this is not just a trend, but a direction of business and entrepreneurship today.

The Brain Under Siege: Solving the Mystery of Brain Disease, and How Scientists are Following the Cl
Multiple Sclerosis. Parkinson's Disease. Alzheimer's. ALS. Chances are that you know someone with a neurologic disease. Because the brain controls so much and is integral to our identity, the diseases that affect it are uniquely devastating both to patients and families. And because it remains the most mysterious of our vital organs, treating the brain is an ongoing puzzle. In The Brain Under Siege, Howard Weiner likens the brain to a crime scene, showing listeners how "clues" point to causes and suggest paths to a cure. He takes listeners on a journey through the latest technological advances, exploring which routes of investigation have gone cold and which have led to breakthroughs. Informative and engaging, this groundbreaking book tells the story behind the science-painting a picture of the discoveries, setbacks, false leads, and victories on the front lines of brain research. Weiner also offers unique insight by exploring the experiences of the brave patients and families who make cutting-edge clinical trials possible. Both a clear-eyed assessment of where the science stands and a gripping and poignant narrative of the dramatic pursuit for a cure, The Brain Under Siege is a must-listen for patients, families, and anyone interested in unraveling the mysteries of the brain.

The Accidental Invasion of Baghdad Zoo
‘A superb read … brilliantly chronicles the incredible passion, poignancy, and nail-biting excitement in pulling off one of the most inspiring animal rescue stories of all time.’ Graham Spence, co-author of Babylon’s Ark, The Elephant Whisperer and Saving the Last Rhinos ‘If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe any of it either.’ Lieutenant Colonel William Sumner, U.S. Army There is hope in chaos. Immerse yourself into the humanity and jeopardy of saving animals in post-invasion Baghdad. As the desperation of tigers, lions and a sun-roasted pelican inspired compassionate American soldiers, Iraqis and conservationists to improvise audacious animal rescues, the city simmered, then boiled. The Accidental Invasion of Baghdad Zoo is not just a zoo story, it is a journey into the manic layers of modern Iraq. The addictive energy of Baghdad comes to life through uplifting missions, tragedy and unshakable camaraderie, suicide bombings, unexpected comedy, Iraqi hospitality and political adventurism. For a year, abandoned palace menageries, Green Zone politicking, raw violence, Saddam Hussein’s stolen Arabian horses, wounded bears and checkpoint puppies spiralled the recovery into animal welfare theatre.

The Stickler's Guide to Science in the Age of Misinformation: The Real Science Behind Hacky Headline
The perfect remedy for our culture of fake news, bad science, and propaganda. We have more scientific information at our fingertips today than ever before. And more disinformation too. Online, on television, and in print, science is often communicated through shorthand analogies and phrases that obscure or omit important facts. “Superfoods,” “right- and left-brained” people, and “global warming” may be snappy and ear-catching but are they backed by scientific facts? Lifelong educator R. Philip Bouchard is a stickler for this kind of thing, and he is well-prepared to set the record straight. The Stickler’s Guide to Science in the Age of Misinformation unpacks the many misuses of terms we see used every day, revealing how these popular “scientific” concepts fall short of real science. Find out why trees do not “store” carbon dioxide; a day is not actually 24 hours; DNA cannot provide a “blueprint” for a human being; and an absence of gravity is not the reason that astronauts float in space.
