The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage Audiobook

The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage

Author: Cliff Stoll Narrator: Will Damron Release Date: January 2020

Before the Internet became widely known as a global tool for terrorists, one perceptive US citizen recognized its ominous potential. Armed with clear evidence of computer espionage, he began a highly personal quest to expose a hidden network of spies that threatened national security. But would the authorities back him up? Cliff Stoll's dramatic firsthand account is 'a computer-age detective story, instantly fascinating [and] astonishingly gripping'-Smithsonian. Cliff Stoll was an astronomer turned systems manager at Lawrence Berkeley Lab when a seventy-five cent accounting error alerted him to the presence of an unauthorized user on his system. The hacker's code name was 'Hunter'-a mysterious invader who managed to break into US computer systems and steal sensitive military and security information. Stoll began a one-man hunt of his own: spying on the spy. It was a dangerous game of deception, broken codes, satellites, and missile bases-a one-man sting operation that finally gained the attention of the CIA . . . and ultimately trapped an international spy ring fueled by cash, cocaine, and the KGB.

Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design Audiobook

Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design

Author: Kat Holmes Narrator: Kat Holmes Release Date: January 2020

Sometimes designed objects reject their users: a computer mouse that doesn't work for left-handed people, for example, or a touchscreen payment system that only works for people who read English phrases, have 20/20 vision, and use a credit card. These mismatches are the building blocks of exclusion. In Mismatch, Kat Holmes describes how design can lead to exclusion, and how design can also remedy exclusion. Holmes tells stories of pioneers of inclusive design, many of whom were drawn to work on inclusion because of their own experiences of exclusion. A gamer and designer who depends on voice recognition shows Holmes his 'Wall of Exclusion,' which displays dozens of game controllers that require two hands to operate; an architect shares her firsthand knowledge of how design can fail communities; an astronomer who began to lose her eyesight adapts a technique called 'sonification' so she can 'listen' to the stars. Designing for inclusion is not a feel-good sideline. Holmes shows how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies. It can be a catalyst for creativity and a boost for the bottom line as a customer base expands. And each time we remedy a mismatched interaction, we create an opportunity for more people to contribute to society in meaningful ways.

How We Learn: The New Science of Education and the Brain Audiobook

How We Learn: The New Science of Education and the Brain

Author: Stanislas Dehaene Narrator: Kaleo Griffith Release Date: January 2020

Brought to you by Penguin. In today's technological society, with an unprecedented amount of information at our fingertips, learning plays a more central role than ever. In How We Learn, Stanislas Dehaene decodes its biological mechanisms, delving into the neuronal, synaptic, and molecular processes taking place in the brain. He explains why youth is such a sensitive period, during which brain plasticity is maximal, but also assures us that our abilities continue into adulthood, and that we can enhance our learning and memory at any age. We can all 'learn to learn' by taking maximal advantage of the four pillars of the brain's learning algorithm: attention, active engagement, error feedback, and consolidation. The human brain is an extraordinary machine. Its ability to process information and adapt to circumstances by reprogramming itself is unparalleled, and it remains the best source of inspiration for recent developments in artificial intelligence. The exciting advancements in A.I. of the last twenty years reveal just as much about our remarkable abilities as they do about the potential of machines. How We Learn finds the boundary of computer science, neurobiology, and cognitive psychology to explain how learning really works and how to make the best use of the brain's learning algorithms, in our schools and universities as well as in everyday life. © Stanislas Dehaene 2020 (P) Penguin Audio 2020
