An Invented Life The Smoking Gun: An autobiographical novel about the Post it sticky notes inventor
An Invented Life shares the story of Alan Amron, a visionary inventor. Even as a child, Alan found it fascinating to create new things, always exploring and trying to understand how everything worked. In the book, Alan tells his story and shares snippets from his childhood and youth in Brooklyn, how he always looked at things differently with deeper insight. This is his journey. Alan started his creating and inventing journey at a young age. Many of his inventions were patented and he significantly profited from them as well. Battery-powered water guns, temperature alarms, the digital photo wallet, etc., were among his many creations, yet his most famous and controversial invention was the Post-it sticky notes by 3M. Even though he is the inventor of the Post-it sticky notes, he was ripped off of his invention due to an unfortunate set of events. But accepting defeat is not in his nature, so he kept fighting, and finally, after a lengthy legal battle, he got the rightful claim of his creation. But An Invented Life is not all about inventing. Alan tells us about his successes and how he made his way into Hollywood, getting the chance to meet many legends. Loss was part of his journey, though, and he shares various accounts of it because this is also a story of tenacity and determination. Alan had always been a freethinking person, and the preconceived perceptions of some people never constrained him or his imagination. The book shows how he became a successful inventor, an entrepreneur, and a businessman. He met many difficulties along the way, but he never gave up, and his determination changed his life. Alan gives examples of how some minor mistakes and oversights can significantly impact a person’s life. By sharing his story with the world, he wants the readers to be mindful of their decisions, considering the possible future impact. This compelling story provides some great teaching moments for those determined to change their lives for the better.

Anatomy of Injustice: A Murder Case Gone Wrong
From Pulitzer Prize winner Raymond Bonner comes the gripping story of a grievously mishandled murder case that put a twenty-three-year-old man on death row. In January 1982, an elderly white widow was found brutally murdered in the small town of Greenwood, South Carolina. Police immediately arrested Edward Lee Elmore, a semiliterate, mentally retarded black man with no previous felony record. His only connection to the victim was having cleaned her gutters and windows, but barely ninety days after the victim's body was found, he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Elmore had been on death row for eleven years when a young attorney named Diana Holt first learned of his case. After attending the University of Texas School of Law, Holt was eager to help the disenfranchised and voiceless-she herself had been a childhood victim of abuse. It required little scrutiny for Holt to discern that Elmore's case reeked of injustice-plagued by incompetent court-appointed defense attorneys, a virulent prosecution, and evidence that was both misplaced and contaminated . It was the cause of a lifetime for the spirited, hardworking lawyer. Holt would spend more than a decade fighting on Elmore's behalf. With the exemplary moral commitment and tenacious investigation that have distinguished his reporting career, Bonner follows Holt's battle to save Elmore's life and shows us how his case is a textbook example of what can go wrong in the American justice system. He reviews police work, evidence gathering, jury selection, work of court-appointed lawyers, latitude of judges, iniquities in the law, prison informants, and the appeals process. Throughout, the actions and motivations of both unlikely heroes and shameful villains in our justice system are vividly revealed. Moving, enraging, suspenseful, and enlightening, Anatomy of Injustice is a vital contribution to our nation's ongoing and increasingly important debate about inequality and the death penalty. "This is seductive storytelling at its best."-Sister Helen Prejean, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Man Walking

And Justice for Some: An Expose of the Lawyers and Judges Who Let Dangerous Criminals Go Free
When Wendy Murphy was a young prosecutor, she learned that the deck is stacked in favor of criminal defendants. Between their arrest and (potential) conviction, murderers, rapists, and drug dealers get more than a fair shake—they get an unfair advantage, often at the expense of their victims. In many states, for instance, defendants can subpoena a victim's private medical and counseling files without any justification. They can threaten victims with brutal cross-examinations if they dare to testify. They can put on "dog and pony show" defenses that have nothing to do with the truth—and even lie under oath with virtually no risk of being prosecuted for perjury. These kinds of injustices make Murphy fighting mad. She's made it her mission to help the victims who get the least protection from our twisted legal system. And in her first book, she guides readers through one horror story after another about judges and lawyers who bend over backward to let the worst offenders go free. You'll meet judges who unapologetically declare that they care more about their liberal ideology than about the pain and suffering of abuse victims; judges who let child molesters walk free because they're "too frail" to go to prison; defense attorneys who take big money from wealthy child molesters, then twist the Bill of Rights beyond recognition; and even a few prosecutors who go easy on criminals for their own selfish reasons. Murphy's true stories will shock you, but they will also inspire you to join the fight for a more rational system. This is an important book that is sure to infuriate America's legal establishment.

Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is sent by mistake to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Apollo 12: Uncensored & Unfiltered
The Apollo 12 moon mission was the second manned mission to the lunar surface, but what made it unique was that all three astronauts on this particular mission were already good friends and navy buddies well before they became astronauts. This audiobook provides the previously untold story of this mission by those who were actually there in that era, and contains the uncensored, unedited, unfiltered, and previously unreleased interviews with all three of these Apollo 12 astronauts – Commander Charles “Pete” Conrad, Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, and Command Module Pilot Richard “Dick” Gordon. In addition, the interviews with many of the NASA officials of that Apollo-era, are also presented here. All of these historical figures bring to the public their invaluable and collective recollections of this historic mission in their own words of those kinder gentler days at the pinnacle of America's technological superiority. The introduction and epilogue was provided by Al Reinert, the Apollo historian and Oscar-nominated documentarian “For All Mankind”, as well the co-screenwriter for the Tom Hanks blockbuster “Apollo 13”.

Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It
The arbitrary lines of zoning maps across the country have come to dictate where Americans may live and work, forcing cities into a pattern of growth that is segregated and sprawling. The good news is that reform is in the air, with states across the country critically reevaluating zoning. In cities as diverse as Minneapolis, Fayetteville, and Hartford, the key pillars of zoning are under fire, with apartment bans being scrapped, minimum lot sizes dropping, and off-street parking requirements disappearing altogether. Some American cities already make land-use planning work without zoning. In Arbitrary Lines, Gray lays the groundwork for this ambitious cause by clearing up common confusions and myths about how American cities regulate growth and examining the major contemporary critiques of zoning. Gray sets out some of the efforts currently underway to reform zoning and charts how land-use regulation might work in the post-zoning American city. Gray shows how zoning has failed to address even our most basic concerns about urban growth over the past century, and how we can think about a new way of planning a more affordable, prosperous, equitable, and sustainable American city.

Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War
Paul Scharre, a Pentagon defense expert and former U.S. Army Ranger, explores what it would mean to give machines authority over the ultimate decision of life or death. Scharre's far-ranging investigation examines the emergence of autonomous weapons, the movement to ban them, and the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. He spotlights artificial intelligence in military technology, spanning decades of innovation from German noise-seeking Wren torpedoes in World War II-antecedents of today's homing missiles-to autonomous cyber weapons, submarine-hunting robot ships, and robot tank armies. Through interviews with defense experts, ethicists, psychologists, and activists, Scharre surveys what challenges might face "centaur warfighters" on future battlefields, which will combine human and machine cognition. We've made tremendous technological progress in the past few decades, but we have also glimpsed the terrifying mishaps that can result from complex automated systems-such as when advanced F-twenty-two fighter jets experienced a computer meltdown the first time they flew over the International Date Line.

Arrest-Proof Yourself: Second Edition
What do you say if a cop pulls you over and asks to search your car? What if he gets up in your face and uses a racial slur? What if there's a roach in the ashtray? And what if your hot-headed teenage son is at the wheel? If you listen to this book, you'll know exactly what to do and say. More people than ever are getting arrested-usually for petty offenses against laws that rarely used to be enforced. And because arrest information is so easily available via the Internet, just one little arrest can disqualify you from jobs, financing, and education. This eye-opening book tells you everything you need to know about how cops operate, the little things that can get you in trouble, and how to stay free from the hungry jaws of the criminal justice system. It is now updated with new and important information on the right of the police to search your car; on guns, knives, and self-defense; and on changes in surveillance methods.

At America's Gates: Chinese Immigration during the Exclusion Era, 1882-1943
With the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Chinese laborers became the first group in American history to be excluded from the United States on the basis of their race and class. This landmark law changed the course of U.S. immigration history, but we know little about its consequences for the Chinese in America or for the United States as a nation of immigrants. At America's Gates is the first book devoted entirely to both Chinese immigrants and the American immigration officials who sought to keep them out. Erika Lee explores how Chinese exclusion laws not only transformed Chinese American lives, immigration patterns, identities, and families but also recast the United States into a "gatekeeping nation." Immigrant identification, border enforcement, surveillance, and deportation policies were extended far beyond any controls that had existed in the United States before. Drawing on a rich trove of historical sources-including recently released immigration records, oral histories, interviews, and letters-Lee brings alive the forgotten journeys, secrets, hardships, and triumphs of Chinese immigrants. Her timely book exposes the legacy of Chinese exclusion in current American immigration control and race relations.
