Three Stories By Mark Twain The McWilliamses And The Burglar
Three of Mark Twain's classic short stories, originally broadcast in the 'Afternoon Reading' slot on BBC Radio 4 from 9 - 11 November 2010, to accompany the 'Autobiography of Mark Twain' (aired on 'Book of the Week'). Read by Stuart Milligan. Twain's classic short stories, with their familiar trademarks of high farce and droll insight, bring us eccentric burglars, cossetted children, and a visitor to a theme park obsessed with the making of mocassins. And also torrents of water... 'The McWilliamses and The Burglar Alarm': Surely their home would be better off with a state of the art security device - if it works, that is... 'The Experience of the McWilliamses with Membranous Croup': A strange fever is afflicting the neighbourhood, just as little Penelope begins to cough. Though the reason is hardly clear cut... 'Niagara': Hooray, it's a day trip to those intrepid Falls, to tramp exciting trails and meet some friendly Red Indians. But the best laid plans... Read by Stuart Milligan and produced by Duncan Minshull.

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable, audiobook edition of The Last Days of Summer by Vanessa Ronan. Read by Stuart Milligan, Barbara Barnes, Kristin Atherton and Becca Stewart. 'Vivid storytelling. ... makes your fingers tremble when you turn the pages. The terror and the pity of it will stay with you for a long time.' Sunday Times Mid-July in Texas. Cicadas shed their dry summer skins, the scent of roses hangs heavy in the still air, and a woman sits alone on her porch at dusk, watching the empty, merciless prairie, its light falling to darkness. He's coming home. Upstairs, Lizzie knows, her daughters are safe in their beds. Joanne, still young enough to smile at strangers, one last summer of childhood left in her. Katie, already a beauty, the first flush of womanhood blooming on her skin. Both sleeping soundly. But out beyond the boundary of their land, the townspeople sleep fitfully. Too many have heard that Jasper is coming back - folk who know him of old, who remember what he did - men who will make it their business to see he doesn't stay too long round these parts ... 'With a blistering ending that leaves you racing to its conclusion ... an exciting new talent' Stylist 'A tense, atmospheric, intriguing read' Liz Nugent, author of Richard and Judy Spring Book Club 2017 winner, Lying in Wait

The Carnival of Crime in Connecticut
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in 1835 and is far better known by his pen name; Mark Twain. An American author and humorist of the first order he is perhaps most famous for his novels, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, written in 1876, and its sequel, The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, written in 1885 and often described with that mythic line - "the Great American Novel." Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the backdrop for these great novels. Apprenticed to a printer he also worked as a typesetter but eventually became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River.Later, heading west with his brother, Orion to make his fortune he failed at gold mining and instead turned to journalism and found his true calling as a writer of humorous stories. It on these shorter stories that this volume dwells. His wit and humour sparkle from every page, his craft evident with every phase and punctured target. Twain was born during a visit by Halley's Comet, and predicted that he would "go out with it" as well. He died the day following the comet's subsequent return in 1910.
