Born in 1857 in Poland, Joseph Conrad became a British citizen just before he turned 30.In the intervening years he lost both parents; becoming an orphan at 11 being thereafter raised by an uncle, who at 16 let the boy go to Marseille where he began to work on merchant ships though at times it included stints gun running and the intrigue of political conspiracy. At age 36 his life turned from one of ships to one of literary pursuit. Conrad brought to English Literature both a further layer of style and a deeper examination of the human psyche in a wealth of work. He wrote many novels, rightly regarded today, as some of the finest in English literature. Among their canon are Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Shadow Line and of course Heart Of Darkness.

Women’s Role in Love and Choice in Love and Marriage - Short Stories
Love. Perhaps the one word solution for everything. An emotion, a state of mind that we strive for, search for. A wondrous force that binds, inspires, and a force that can spin out of control; unbalanced and fragile. Love reflects, changes and embraces us all. In this series we explore the many facets of love through literary talents that span both time and country. Men did, in the age of our classic authors, usually declare their supremacy in all manner of things. They had the authority, both moral and legal, they had control of the assets. If the game is rigged there can be only one winner. Yet in this volume our authors more closely examine the part of women in the relationship of love and open both our eyes and our ears to a truth in each and every story that reveals a rather different balance.1 - Woman's Role and Choice in Love - Short Stories - An Introduction2 - The Ice Palace by F Scott Fitzgerald3 - The Horse Dealer's Daughter by D H Lawrence4 - Madame Rose Hanie by Khalil Gibran5 - A Respectable Woman by Kate Chopin6 - The Daughter of Lilith by Anatole France7 - The Skylight Room by O Henry8 - The Looking Glass by Anton Chekhov9 - Here We Are by Dorothy Parker10 - Right At Last by Elizabeth Gaskell11 - The Unfortunate Bride or The Blind Lady a Beauty by Aphra Behn12 - Spurs by Tod Robbins13 - The Inquity of Oblivion by Kenneth Grahame14 - An Outcast of the People by Bithia Mary Croker15 - Two Offers by Frances Watkins Harper16 - The Difference by Ellen Glasgow

Charles Edward Montague was born in London on New Year’s Day, 1867 and educated at the City of London School and then Balliol College, Oxford. At university, Montague, a keen writer, wrote several literary reviews for the Manchester Guardian and was then invited for a month’s trial and, after impressing, to work there. Montague and the editor, C. P. Scott shared the same political views and between them they turned the Manchester Guardian into a vibrant and campaigning newspaper. They were for Irish Home Rule and against both the Boer War and the First World War.But, after the war had begun, Montague believed that it was important to give full and unequivocal support to the British government. Despite his age, 47, he was determined to serve.Montague was soon promoted to the rank of second lieutenant and with it a transfer to Military Intelligence. The war also brought about a crisis in his faith and it was suitable resolved by Montague temporarily putting it to one side and carrying on with the fighting. In November 1918 the war was over and Montague could now return home to his wife and family and also to the Manchester Guardian where he would continue to work until retirement in 1925. For Montague the war had been corrosive but it had given him much to write about, both for the paper and also for his books, which he now hoped to spend more time on. Among those to flow from his pen are the novels A Hind Let Loose and Rough Justice as well as collections of short stories, other essays and a travel book.He finally retired in 1925, and settled down to become a full-time writer in the last years of his life. Charles Edward Montague died in Manchester on May 28th, 1928 at the age of 61.

At this time of the year as the nights close in and the temperature drops Winter seems like a season that nobody really enjoys and we look forward all the more to Spring. For many children however it is the bounty of Christmas that steals their attention and for others the renewal of the New Year. But for Nature it is pause for breath, to take stock of what has gone by in the year to date and ready herself for the energies and dramatic development to the landscape that Spring will bring. But Winter has its beauty too; the frost or snow covered ground, the grey swell of a winters sea and the bleak yet beautiful imagery of the landscape. Our collection of poems brings together the talents of many best loved poets such as Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, Emily Dickinson, Daniel Sheehan, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Louis Stevenson and Emily Bronte are amongst many who catalogue and celebrate the season and its feelings in unique and telling ways. This collection is read for you by Ghizela Rowe And Gideon Wagner.

William Makepeace Thackeray - The Short Stories
The Short Stories Of William Makepeace Thackeray. The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of William Makepeace Thackeray. The great author of Vanity Fair and The Luck Of Barry Lyndon was born in India in 1811. At age 5 his father died and his mother sent him back to England. His education was of the best but he himself seemed unable to apply his talents to a rigorous work ethic. After a few years of marriage his wife began to suffer from depression and over the years became detached from reality. He himself suffered from ill health later in his life and the one pursuit that kept him moving forward was that of writing and in his life time he was placed second only to Dickens. High praise indeed. In this volume we take some of his shorter works, they are perfect miniatures of the world as he saw it. Many of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth.

William Blake was born on 28th November 1757 in London to parents of modest income that could only afford a basic education of reading and writing although he did attend a drawing school for a short time. His artistic skill was apparent relatively early and at the age of 14 he stopped working in his father's hosiery shop and became an apprentice engraver. This apprenticeship finished when he was 21 and at 25 he married Catherine Boucher. He taught her to read and write and together in 1789 they published Songs of Innocence with text and engravings printed from copper plates and illustrations finished by hand with watercolours. It did not sell well and throughout his life he remained largely unrecognised often on the verge of poverty. This led to a deep depression for many years and he was often considered mad by his contemporaries. His creativity and imagination with its undercurrents of mysticism, spiritualism and philosophy are apparent in this selection of poems and whilst classed as a seminal figure in the Romantic Age it wasn't until the late 19th century that his work was recognised. The 20th century saw an even greater appreciation of his poetry with Blake's voyage beyond the rational and material chiming with the Beat poets, Dylan, Van Morrison and Jim Morrison of the band the Doors , named after Blake's phrase Doors of Perception from his poem Marriage of Heaven and Hell. Further acclaim has been attributed to him from many scholars of art, psychology and of course literature. His poems have inspired composers such as Vaughn Williams, Britten and Taverner and Jerusalem a hymn still sung today. Blake's vivid and intense work is still relevant to all to this day and he is recognised as a saint in the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica. William Blake died on 12th August 1827 and in 1957 a memorial was erected at Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Virginia Woolf - The Short Stories
The Short Stories Of Virginia Woolf. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Virginia Woolf. Adeline Virginia Woolf was born in 1882 and was to become a founder of modernist writing. Her background is filled with elements of tragedy that she somehow overcame to become a revered writer. Her mother died when she was 13, her half sister Stella two years later and with it her first of several nervous breakdowns. She began writing professionally at age 20 but her father's death two years later brought a complete mental collapse and she was briefly institutionalised. Three of her half brothers had sexually abused her so further darkness was added to her life. But out of this came great innovations in writing; she was a pioneer of "stream of consciousness". Whilst the dark periods continued to interrupt her emotional state her rate of work never ceased. Until on 28 March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat, filled its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse and drowned herself leaving behind a note which read in part "Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do". Many of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. Victory for the Slain by Hugh Lofting
Hugh John Lofting was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire on January 14th, 1886 to English and Irish parents. Lofting was initially educated at Mount St Mary's College in Spinkhill, Derbyshire, a Jesuit boarding school from the age of eight. By 1905 at age eighteen he was to study abroad, taking classes at the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA in civil engineering. Thereafter he embarked on a quest to travel widely before settling down to write of his adventures.Lofting had always leaned towards pacifism but the Great War was about to erupt all over Europe. Initially Lofting worked for the British Government whilst based in New York but by 1918 he had enlisted and was fighting on the front line. Life on the front line, in the trenches, was hell beyond description. Lofting didn't want to include this grim horror in letters to his children. The answer for them and for him was to write. With these first letters the imaginative world and the foundations of the very successful Doctor Dolittle novels for children now began. But life, for Lofting, in the battle weary trenches was now rudely interrupted. In 1918, as the Allies swept forward against the retreating German lines, Lofting was wounded by shrapnel from a hand grenade that lodged in his upper thigh. This injury would plague him for the rest of his life as some of the metal fragments were impossible to remove. After his recovery he was invalided out of the Army. It was now that the family decided to re-locate and they now moved to Killingworth, Connecticut, in the United States. It was to be from here that the Doctor Dolittle series; the adventures of a country physician who learned to talk with animals would be written. As we know the books were successful around the world and have been adapted for film and television many times, as well as for stage and for radio.Hugh John Lofting died on September 26th, 1947, at age 61 in Topanga, California. This volume comes to you from Portable Poetry, a specialized imprint from Deadtree Publishing. Our range is large and growing and covers single poets, themes, and many compilations.
