101 Weird Ways to Make Money: Cricket Farming, Repossessing Cars, and Other Jobs With Big Upside and
The book will cover dozens of fascinating and creative ways to make money in business with very little competition, as an employee, in business, and (occasionally) as an investor. Using true stories, the author's own experiences, and extensive research, readers will be introduced to unusual and sometimes dirty jobs and businesses, many of which they have not heard of or read about previously. The approach will be to provide entertaining information along the lines of the Discovery Channel television program 'Dirty Jobs,' but there will be two distinct differences. First, the emphasis will be on ways to make money which are accessible to the average person. The jobs and businesses in this book will be possible and practical for most people. Second, emphasis will be placed on how to make good money. It may be easy to start a business cleaning up dog droppings from homeowners yards, and it may be entertaining to read about a business like this, but that's not enough. In this case, for example, the reader would be introduced to the concept of eventually scaling up and hiring employees, then contracting to clean out animal shelters. A 'Where The Money Is' section will be included at the end of each selection, to suggest ways to make more than a little extra cash or even more than just a living. Sample jobs include: Crime-scene cleaning business Part-time street vending Septic cleaning industry Selling podcasts online Setting up surplus goods sales

Arthur Cathcart and Natsumi Fitzgerald wanted to believe they were free of the nearly invisible, malignant forces they had pursued, and been pursued by, across continents and oceans. The slightly brain-damaged tech-freak researcher and the blackjack-dealing psychologist had convinced themselves that life aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean, incognito and in love, could be a lasting refuge. The death of that illusion was as brutal as it was abrupt. Even people who knew how to dodge ruthless outlaws and relentless law enforcement learned there were powers from which no one could ever hide—not in the twenty-first century, not if you wanted more than to simply exist. To truly live in the world, you had to have a world that allows you to live. Soldiers fighting in Vietnam had a saying when pinned down under enemy fire: The only way out is through. And so it is that Arthur and Natsumi take to the fight, where the full expanse of both the virtual and material worlds is the field of engagement, nearly blind to the threats that surround them yet searching for that impossible path back to the ordinary lives they’d been forced to abandon. Wiser, stronger, and more experienced in the art of clandestine combat than they ever imagined they’d be, Arthur and Natsumi understand what makes you strong can also get you killed in a hurry—that the reserves of resilience and determination aren’t limitless, that the power of intellect and craft dwindles in the face of a pitiless and resolute foe, that there are a billion ways to die but only one way to live. “At the start of Knopf’s highly inventive third mystery featuring market researcher Arthur Cathcart, armed men seize Cathcart and girlfriend Natsumi Fitzgerald from their sailboat and threaten them with torture unless they reveal the location of a missing billion dollars, of which they know nothing. A temporary reprieve allows the couple, who have been living in the Caribbean under aliases, to assess their situation and conclude that they will never be safe until they get out from under the (false) charges against them back in the States…Lending a hand are former FBI agent Shelly Gross, cyber geek Strider, and Cathcart’s doctor sister, Evelyn. Throughout, Cathcart proves as nimble on his feet as he is quick witted.”—Publishers Weekly

A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood: The Bible and the American Civil War
In his Second Inaugural Address, delivered as the nation was in the throes of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that both sides ''read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.'' He wasn't speaking metaphorically: the Bible was frequently wielded as a weapon in support of both North and South. As James P. Byrd reveals in this insightful narrative, no book was more important to the Civil War than the Bible. From Massachusetts to Mississippi and beyond, the Bible was the nation's most read and respected book. It presented a drama of salvation and damnation, of providence and judgment, of sacred history and sacrifice. When Americans argued over the issues that divided them -- slavery, secession, patriotism, authority, white supremacy, and violence -- the Bible was the book they most often invoked. Soldiers fought the Civil War with Bibles in hand, and both sides called the war just and sacred. In scripture, both Union and Confederate soldiers found inspiration for dying-and for killing-on a scale never before seen in the nation's history. With approximately 750,000 fatalities, the Civil War was the deadliest of the nation's wars, leading many to turn to the Bible not just to fight but to deal with its inevitable trauma. A fascinating overview of religious and military conflict, A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood draws on an astonishing array of sources to demonstrate the many ways that Americans enlisted the Bible in the nation's bloodiest, and arguably most biblically-saturated conflict.

A Knock at the Door: The Story of My Secret Work with Israeli MIAs and POWs
The inside story of Israel's secret negotiations to bring home their soldiers taken hostage by terrorist groups. Suppose one day, your son or husband, while serving in the military or working as a journalist, is taken hostage by a terrorist group-and you have no idea whether your loved one is dead or alive or how to even make contact with the insurgents holding him. It's a nightmare scenario that has sadly taken place dozens of times in the past twenty years in the Middle East. Here in the U.S., the government does not always get involved. Instead, it will engage the services of a neutral country to negotiate with the terrorists. Unfortunately, many times the terrorists insist on never-ending demands in order to torment the family of the hostage. Unlike Israel, we've never had a central address for these types of scenarios. But maybe after reading this book, it's an idea we could, and should, consider. Ory Slonim, the international "door knocker," was an invention of necessity by the Israeli government. There were many good and brave human beings involved in this matter. Here for the first time is the story of the one man in Israel who, for more than two decades, was known as the "door knocker." He had been a private Israeli lawyer when he was asked to undertake, on behalf of the Israeli government, secret negotiations to find out the whereabouts of Israeli soldiers who were taken alive. In his capacity as negotiator, his story will take you into the worlds of the furtive Mossad, the twisted minds of terrorists, the forever traumatized lives of the parents whose children never came home from battle, and into Ory's own resilient, compassionate, and amazingly resolute negotiations when ordinary people would have easily broken down.hostage by terrorist groups. His ultimate mission was to bring them home, dead oralive. A New World in Our Hearts: In Conversation with Michael Albert
An interview with Noam Chomsky is a bit like throwing batting practice to Babe Ruth. What you lob in, he will hammer out. This conversational interview by Michael Albert, who has been close to Chomsky for roughly half a century and talked with him many hundreds of times, spans a wide range of topics including journalism, science, religion, the racist foundations of American society, education as indoctrination, issues of class and resistance, colonialism, imperialism, and much more. The thread through it all is that every topic—and the list above takes us just about halfway through this book—reveals how social systems work, what their impact on humanity is, and how they are treated by the elite, mainstream intellectuals, and leftists. It gets personal, theoretical, and observational. The lessons are relevant to all times, so far, and pretty much all places, and Chomsky’s logical scalpel, with moral guidance, is relentless.

A Religion of One's Own: A Guide to Creating a Personal Spirituality in a Secular World
The New York Times bestselling author and trusted spiritual adviser offers a follow-up to his classic Care of the Soul . Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who' ve turned away from religious institutions-- and others who have lived wholly without religion-- hunger for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow organized religion' s strict and often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One' s Own , bestselling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion. Two decades ago, Moore' s Care of the Soul touched a chord with millions of readers yearning to integrate spirituality into their everyday lives. In A Religion of One' s Own , Moore expands on the topics he first explored shortly after leaving the monastery. He recounts the benefits of contemplative living that he learned during his twelve years as a monk but also the more original and imaginative spirituality that he later developed and embraced in his secular life. Here, he shares stories of others who are creating their own path: a former football player now on a spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence. At a time when so many feel disillusioned with or detached from organized religion yet long for a way to move beyond an exclusively materialistic, rational lifestyle, A Religion of One' s Own points the way to creating an amplified inner life and a world of greater purpose, meaning, and reflection.
