Jenny found her husband Billy in his garden chair. He had passed away with a smile on his face, and in his hand he was holding his favourite gnome, the one called MOLAC. The old gardener had died a happy man. He knew about the secret. What he hadn't been aware of, though, were the adventures Archie and Joe were going to be involved in, because of their love for the Gnomes. This was a pity. Billy Potts would have enjoyed the adventure.

Grace is fascinated by the natural world. To increase this precious sense of wonder she is chosen by Nature’s spirit guides and guardians to travel on ‘a funny sometimes fearful journey’ with an amethyst stone as her guide and promise of help along the way. Creatures she expects to assist her are too self-important. Her allies are small, often overlooked plants, flowers and insects. Her main goal seems to be discovering what lies in and beyond the rainbow, but her adventures bring her only slowly nearer to its mysterious garden, bridge and palace. Everything appears to be a long way round. She decides to assist a lost, bitter boy – Downcast Don – to rediscover ‘wonder’ by obtaining for him a specially made silver spade. This takes her through strange and fearful forests, down a well to find an underground forge, and into an overwhelming encounter with an ancient giantess in a bleak desert. Her chief guide, Heartsease, assures her that it’s all part of a search for rainbow wisdom, to recognise the importance of all things and people and to accept ‘not knowing’. She can then ascend the ‘Shining Stairway’ to a stranger country beyond. Up here Grace is nearer the rainbow but time and distance play tricks and she is in danger of being side-tracked. A knight, Sir Cloudy, a kind dreamer who lives in a time warp, invites her to his ‘Castle in the Air’. Just short of the rainbow garden she is deceived by a Menace and his monstrous Mother, and only just escapes their clutches. The promised places are beautiful and intriguing but she must learn about what lies under the surface. The palace that crowns the bow bridge is where the guides and guardians weave their many-coloured tapestries that reveal perspectives and choices about the future. When Grace descends the vanishing rainbow steps she meets characters who have made her journey so instructive, and once back in the everyday world she is still herself but somehow more so because she can see and understand more acutely.

Similar to Jenny Worth’s Call the Midwife, this book reveals a different, still hidden medical field, the world of x-rays. This story follows a shy, sixteen year old girl, as she attempts to become a professional radiographer from 1962 into the 1990’s. All the incidents and cases are true, for they are Patricia Toulson’s real-life memories. She is thrust into the harsh disciplinary world of a general hospital, ruled by barbed tongues of nursing Sisters’ and ridiculed and harassed by experienced male staff. She experiences horror and tragedy, sadness and joy but also humour abounds in unexpected places. She encounters child abuse, infertility and teenage terminal illness, countered by the wonders of the healing body and the splendour and radiance of pregnancy.

'Dragon Riders' is an amazing adventure about three children caught up in a timeless war. Their lives are turned upside down by an attack on the monastery where they live. Their flight leads them into an encounter with a young dragon, which they save from certain death. Previously believing that dragons were solely part of mythology, they are rewarded with a flight on three full-grown dragons. The dragons leave them each with a bracelet, which shrink to fit and hence are unable to be removed. The war causes their paths to divide, and they encounter magic, the enemy, a variety of characters and eventual capture. Reunited through incarceration, they discover the secret of their dragon bracelets, calling on the dragons to rescue them. With the reappearance of the dragons, their involvement in the war increases as they seek to bring an end to the fighting. The characters in this story are delightful, and are brought to life with the things they say and the actions they take, rather than simply through description. The story is written in a lovely, simple style that children will find easy to follow. Similarly, the plot is quick and captivating and the dragons especially are awe-inspiring. Their descriptions are bound to keep young children on the edge of their seats.
