Let’s Go to the Beach: A History of Sun and Fun by the Sea
Did you know that women once wore corsets under their bathing suits? Or that “semi-drowning”—the strip and plunge practice—was thought to be good for one’s health? Or that Pudgy Stockton, the body-building queen of Muscle Beach, California, opened the country’s first gym for women? From the bathhouses of the ancient Greeks to Venice Beach and Coney Island, Let’s Go to the Beach takes a multifaceted and well-researched look at beaches and their attendant customs. The text explores such historical transformations as the evolution of the waterways from places of commerce to venues of health and recreation, as well as the bathing suit's revealing journey from full-body cover-up to string bikini. Information about environmental concerns (including beach safety and preservation), along with quirky facts and trivia, round out this intriguing volume. “[A] fun grab bag of history, trivia, and useful information…Fields reads with vivacity, sounding exactly like a beach enthusiast eager to share her passion.”—Publishers Weekly

Letters to His Son, 1746-1747: On the Fine Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman
The first set in an extraordinary collection of personal letters, written by Lord Chesterfield Not originally intended for publication, the celebrated and controversial correspondences between Lord Chesterfield and his son Philip were praised in their day as a complete manual of education, and despised by Samuel Johnson for teaching 'the morals of a whore and the manners of a dancing-master.' Reflecting the political craft of a leading statesman and the urbane wit of a man who associated with Pope, Addison, and Swift, Lord Chesterfield's letters reveal the author's political cynicism, his views on good breeding, and instruction to his son in etiquette and the worldly arts. These entertaining letters illuminate the fascinating aspects of eighteenth-century life and manners.

The first set of an extraordinary collection of 10 sets of personal letters written by Lord Chesterfield to his illegitimate son, young Philip Stanhope, then living abroad with his tutor to further his education. His Lordship, later secretary of state, hoped that his son would follow in his footsteps and took endless pains to instruct him on the essential and finer behavioral traits of a the aristocracy. AUTHOR Lord Chesterfield Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) was a British politician, serving in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Well traveled and a reknown orator, Chesterfield became a successful diplomat with close ties to the Prince of Wales. Chesterfield's writing gifts served him well politically, writing phamphlets under an assumed name, he was able to impact political decisions from inside and outside the chambers. Before his marriage, Chesterfield fathered an illegitimate son. The son, Philip Stanhope, was his only natural child and Lord Chesterfield cared deeply about him, his entire life. Chesterfield wrote Philip over 400 letters over a 30 year period, most of which have survived. Ironically, the letters were preserved by a great source of sorrow for Chesterfield. Chesterfield's son had married a woman of humble birth who had born him two children. Chesterfield did not learn of their existence until after his son death at 36. Philip's widow preserved and published the letters. "

Rifka knows nothing about America when she flees from Russia with her family in 1919. But she dreams she will at last be safe from the Russian soldiers and their harsh treatment of the Jews in the new country. Throughout her journey, Rifka carries with her a cherished volume of poetry by Alexander Pushkin. In it, she records her observations and experiences in the form of letters to her beloved cousin she has left behind. Strong-hearted and determined, Rifka must endure a great deal: humiliating examinations by doctors and soldiers, deadly typhus, separation from all she has ever known and loved, murderous storms at sea - and as if this is not enough, the loss of her glorious golden hair. And even if she does make it to America, she's not sure America will have her. "Hesse's vivacious tale colorfully and convincingly refreshes the immigrant experience." - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review "Based largely on the memories of the author's great-aunt, this historical novel has a plot, characters, and style that will make it an often-requested choice from young readers.
