Fairy Tales of the Fiercer Sex Audiobook

Fairy Tales of the Fiercer Sex

Alison Larkin selects and introduces fairytales of strong, independent, brave, at times irreverent girls and women who take charge of their lives, go on their own adventures, rescue themselves and sometimes even save the men they love. These are not stories of helpless females shut up in high towers waiting around for a handsome man to rescue them while they sleep for years or from brushing their golden hair a lot. These heroines have far more to distinguish them than the fact that they (sometimes) end up married to a prince. Stories included: The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, Molly Whuppie and the Double-faced Giant by Flora Annie Steel, A Pottle of Brains by Joseph Jacobs, Cap O’ Rushes by Joseph Jacobs, Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, Mr. Fox by Joseph Jacobs, Clever Grethel by the Brothers Grimm, Kari Woodengown by P.C. Absjornsen, The Twelve Dancing Princesses by the Brothers Grimm, Felicia and the Pot of Pinks by Madame la Comtesse d’Aulnoy, The Iron Stove by Miss Mulock, The Hedley Kow by Joseph Jacobs, The Six Sillies by Monsieur Lemoine, Baba Yaga a Russian folk tale re-told by Verra Xenophontovna Kalamatiano De Blumenthal, The Old Woman in the Woods by the Brothers Grimm, The Idle Spinner by the Brothers Grimm, The Twelve Brothers by the Brothers Grimm, Frederick and Catherine by the Brothers Grimm, Little Red Cap by the Brothers Grimm, Beauty and The Beast by Marie Le Prince de Beaumont. Cover design by Lisa Cavender Title music by Gary Schriener and Curt Sobel

From Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder und Hausmarchen) Grimm's Fairy Tales was first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. Though earlier editions included material deemed unpalatable to modern audiences, subsequent editions softened some of the violence and raciness of the original. Containing 62 stories, including Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), Hansel and Grete, Snow White and Rose Red, and Ashputtel (Cinderella), this collection was praised by W.H. Auden as among the founding works of Western culture.

They give shelter on a winter night to a kindly bear, who treats them gently and returns every night. In the summer, the girls encounter a wicked dwarf whose beard is stuck in a tree. Freeing the dwarf, the girls are met with loud ungrateful recriminations for cutting his beard. More episodes of rescuing the dwarf from various perils transpire in a similar fashion. In the end, the bear comes to aid of the girls.

Ashputtel (or, Cinderella) Audiobook

Ashputtel (or, Cinderella)

Author: The Brothers Grimm Narrator: George Newbern Release Date: September 2018

Ashputtel, or Cinderella, is a folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression and triumphant reward. In it, a young girl is forced by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters to a life of servitude. Sleeping next to the fireplace, she earns the nickname Ashputtel. Elements of the Grimm treatment of this story are much more intense than other versions (Perrault and Disney, for example), with the stepsisters experiencing a more violent conclusion. The theme of the persecuted heroine whose attributes go unrecognized has remained popular in modern storytelling, movies and media.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Author: Brothers Grimm, Jerry Robbins, The Brothers Grimm Narrator: The Colonial Radio Players Release Date: September 2011

Once upon a time in the middle of winter, when the flakes of snow were falling like feathers from the sky, a queen sat at a window sewing, and the frame of the window was made of black ebony. And whilst she was sewing and looking out of the window at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell upon the snow. And the red looked pretty upon the white snow, and she thought to herself, "Would that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the window-frame." Soon after that she had a little daughter, who was as white as snow, and as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony; and she was therefore called Little Snow White. And when the child was born, the Queen died. A year later, the King remarried a haughty and vain woman and that's when Snow White's troubles began.
