The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. Although The Prince was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. This is partly because it was written in the vernacular Italian rather than Latin, a practice that had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's Divine Comedy and other works of Renaissance literature. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the 'effectual' truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It is also notable for being in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time, particularly those concerning politics and ethics.

This political science classic still has the power to shock, just as it did when first published almost five hundred years ago. Fritz Weaver reads in an appropriately detached manner, for it is this air of objectivity regarding the ruthless pursuit of political power that has made Machiavelli's name synonymous with evil. This quality recording begins and ends with ceremonial music, which sets the right tone for a treatise directed to royalty. A masterpiece of prophecy, psychological insight, and forceful prose, The Prince is a classic of realpolitik, stunningly relevant to our times.

The Prince is a political treatise by Machiavelli that is not considered to be representative of the work published during his lifetime, but is the most remembered. The theories in this book describe methods that an aspiring prince can use to acquire the throne, or an existing prince can use to maintain his reign. These theories include defense and military, perceived reputation, generosity, cruelty versus mercy, gaining honors, fortune and a number of other discourses.

"It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles." How can a prince rise to power? What must he do to remain in it? What is expected of a good ruler? Which is better-to be feared or to be loved? Offering an explicit insight into the minds of a ruler, here is a practical handbook and a political treatise exploring the attainment, maintenance and utilization of political power in the Western world. It warns that if a state is not governed properly it shall collapse on the ruler. It describes the art and craft of war. It elaborates on the qualities of a prince and his prudence. It gives lessons in statesmanship and on judging the strength of principalities. The world's most influential-and controversial-treatise on politics Composed in exile and published posthumously, The Prince is Niccolò Machiavelli's legacy and the foundation of modern political theory. Drawing on his firsthand experiences as a diplomat and military commander in the Florentine Republic, Machiavelli disregards the rhetorical flourishes and sentimentality typically found in sixteenth-century mirrors for princes-guides instructing noblemen in the fine art of ruling-and gets straight to practical matters: how to eliminate rivals, when to use force, whether it is better to be loved or feared.

From his perspective in Renaissance Italy, Machiavelli's aim in this classic work was to resolve conflict with the ruling prince, Lorenzo de Medici. Machiavelli based his insights on the way people really are rather than an ideal of how they should be. This is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power. Astonishing in its candor The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work on what it takes to be a prince, a king, or a president. When Machiavelli was removed from his post in his beloved Florence, he resolved to set down a treatise on leadership that was practical, not idealistic. The Prince he envisioned would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values. Even today, this sixteenth-century classic has become essential reading or listening for every student of government, and is the ultimate audiobook on power politics.

Given the tumultuous political era in which he lived, Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527), the Italian Renaissance author, philosopher, historian and diplomat, had a front-row seat to observe the political machinations, power struggles and dynastic changes in Renaissance Europe. He would compile these observations in 'The Prince,' which would swiftly gain a reputation both as a simple treatise on how to achieve and wield political power as well as an immoral, by-the-numbers account of how tyrants can seize and maintain dictatorships. As a result of the teachings in this book, Machiavelli's very name has become an adjective - 'Machiavellian' - that has come to denote political deception, cold-blooded calculation and the use of treachery as a means to seize power. It is presented here in its original and unabridged format, translated from the Italian by Luigi Ricci.

The Prince (1532) is a treatise that systematically charts the best strategies for successful governing. It unapologetically places realism above idealism, showing would-be kings how to get what they want while appearing to be generous and honourable, and advocates that the means 'cruelty, duplicity and terror' justify the ends of secure monarchical rule. But it can also be read as the work of a secret republican subtly undermining the despotism of the ruling Medici family. Hugely influential for nearly five centuries, and the reason the word 'Machiavellian' has its place in English, The Prince retains its status as the archetypal political primer. **Please contact member services for additional documents**

There have been many political philosophies published throughout the time of literate man, but few have made such an impact as Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince. This novel is considered the all-time best book on political strategy. It has of late become a much-referred-to book for all competitive situations. Machiavelli's name is associated closely with his philosophy, as he well deserves.

Witty, informative, and devilishly shrewd, this work is a must-listen for anyone interested in politics and power. The world-renowned philosopher's classic treatise reveals the techniques and strategies for gaining and keeping political control. "How we live is so far removed from how we ought to live, that he who abandons what is done for what ought to be done, will rather bring about his own ruin than his preservation. Therefore, it is necessary to learn how not to be good," wrote Machiavelli.

Strategy Masters: The Prince, The Art of War, and The Gallic Wars
Learn from the best military strategists of history how best to fight your battles in Strategy Masters. This collection includes three major military and political strategy texts: The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, and The Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar. These three books, though written specifically about military and political strategies, are frequently cited by modern business strategists as insightful looks at human nature and philosophy. The Prince – The main philosophy in The Prince is that a good ruler is one that always works for the benefit of the state, even when this requires acting immorally or unethically. Basically, the ends justify the means, even if the means are killing innocent people, blackmailing, and being deceitful. Whether this key idea is agreed with or not, its impact on political thought cannot be denied. The Art of War - Sun Tzu’s The Art of War is one of the most well-known works of military tactical writing in the world. Written in 500 B.C. in China, this book presents military strategies and wisdom that has been enjoyed for over 2000 years. Leaders across generations have been inspired the ideas of Sun Tzu – his management philosophies can apply to both a battlefield and a board room. The Gallic Wars - During Julius Caesar’s reign over Rome, he fought and led in several large battles across the continent, seeking to expand the empire and unite the continent into one large dominion. For 9 years, his conquests took place against Germanic and Celtic people who opposed the Roman Empire. The Gallic Wars is his narrative retelling of this conquest. It is often studied by students of the Latin language for its clarity and for its representation of the important political and historical issues of the Roman Empire’s inhabitants.
Julius Caesar, Niccolo Machiavelli, Sun Tzu (Author), Robert Brinkman, Seth Thompson (Narrator)
