Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is an action-packed story of a voyage into the unknown - an enthralling mixture of 'fact' and fiction. Although Jules Verne is describing the most fantastic of events, he gives credence to them by packing the novel with details and dates. To add further weight, the narrator is a man of science - the respected Professor Aronnax. It is through his empathy with Captain Nemo that the reader comes to know the fallen, tortured soul who has condemned himself ceaselessly to roam the seas. His story elevates a good, rip-roaring yarn into fine tragedy.
French Professor Aronnax and his servant join the Abraham Lincoln, an American frigate, on a mission to find and destroy a "sea-unicorn of colossal dimensions, armed not with a halberd, but with a real spur, as the armored frigates." The undersea monster is thought to be responsible for the disappearance of over 200 ships. When they encounter the "gigantic cetacean" it disables the Abraham Lincoln and knocks Professor Aronnax, his servant, and the hot-tempered harpooner, Ned Land overboard. The three must cling to the beast or drown; soon they realize that it is really a man-made underwater vehicle.

During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.
Professor Pierre Aronnax is a fortunate though unwilling passenger on the amazing submersible, Nautilus. Its captain, Nemo, hounded by the "civilized" world above water, wages a solitary war against what he views as injustice and hatred. While Aronnax gazes out through the observation windows of the massive craft on the deepest trenches of the sea, the greater wonder may be the enigmatic commander at his side and the deadly quest he pursues.
