Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales
Brought to life by Academy Award®-winning actor F. Murray Abraham and an ensemble cast of narrators, and featuring original music by Michael Bacon, this collection contains Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, as well as a selection of lesser-known favorites. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore and fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own. His fairy tales are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and vivid imagination. They are like no others written before or since. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text in the translation from Danish to English. Listeners will rediscover Hans Christian Andersen's best-known fairy tales, and find new favorites. Stories: The Princess and the Pea Thumbelina The Emperor's New Clothes The Steadfast Tin Soldier The Ugly Duckling The Little Mermaid The Little Match Girl The Wild Swans The Nightingale The Snow Queen "The Will-o'-the-Wisps are in Town," said the Bog Witch The Rags The Adventures of a Thistle Luck Can Be Found in a Stick The Days of the Week

Fairy Tales of the Fiercer Sex
Alison Larkin selects and introduces fairytales of strong, independent, brave, at times irreverent girls and women who take charge of their lives, go on their own adventures, rescue themselves and sometimes even save the men they love. These are not stories of helpless females shut up in high towers waiting around for a handsome man to rescue them while they sleep for years or from brushing their golden hair a lot. These heroines have far more to distinguish them than the fact that they (sometimes) end up married to a prince. Stories included: The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, Molly Whuppie and the Double-faced Giant by Flora Annie Steel, A Pottle of Brains by Joseph Jacobs, Cap O’ Rushes by Joseph Jacobs, Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, Mr. Fox by Joseph Jacobs, Clever Grethel by the Brothers Grimm, Kari Woodengown by P.C. Absjornsen, The Twelve Dancing Princesses by the Brothers Grimm, Felicia and the Pot of Pinks by Madame la Comtesse d’Aulnoy, The Iron Stove by Miss Mulock, The Hedley Kow by Joseph Jacobs, The Six Sillies by Monsieur Lemoine, Baba Yaga a Russian folk tale re-told by Verra Xenophontovna Kalamatiano De Blumenthal, The Old Woman in the Woods by the Brothers Grimm, The Idle Spinner by the Brothers Grimm, The Twelve Brothers by the Brothers Grimm, Frederick and Catherine by the Brothers Grimm, Little Red Cap by the Brothers Grimm, Beauty and The Beast by Marie Le Prince de Beaumont. The Princess and The Goblin by George MacDonald and The Goblin and the Grocer by Hans Christian Ande
“I do not write for children, but for the childlike, whether of five or fifty or seventy-five.” — George MacDonald The Princess and the Goblin, first published in 1872, was one of the very first fantasy novels and had a strong influence on the work of Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien. Fans of fantasy-fiction love it to this day. Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives in a remote mountainous region with no one but her nursemaid for company. Then she meets a mysterious old woman and Curdie, a young miner. Meanwhile, deep in the heart of the earth beneath her lurk grotesque and hideous creatures seeking vengeance against human kind. The Goblin and the Grocer by Hans Christian Andersen is a short fairy story about a very different sort of goblin who must choose between poetry and an edible Christmas treat. (Alison Larkin is) hugely entertaining." — The Times "A narrator to seek out." — AudioFile Magazine

Adapted by Inna Shapiro from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen Thumbelina is the story about a little girl's dedication and love for the old woman who gave her life. This is a new version of a classic tale set to beautiful classical music from beginning to end. Once upon a time, there was an old woman. She was very kind and loving. She also was very lonely, because she had no children. Quite often, she dreamed about having a little girl whom she would love and care for. One morning, in one of her flowers, she found a little girl. The girl was so small—smaller than the thumb on the old woman's hand. The woman gave her a name: Thumbelina. She loved to take care of her little granddaughter, and Thumbelina loved to help her granny to take care of her flowers and feed the birds in their garden. They were very happy together. But one night, a big, ugly toad jumped through the window and took the girl away. The toad wanted Thumbelina to marry her son. The marriage didn't take place, but Thumbelina was left alone in the middle of the swamp, not knowing how she could get back home to the old woman, who, she knew, was very worried about her. On her way back home, she met a lot of strange characters: a large may bug, a small mouse, a blind mole, and a beautiful prince—some good, some not so good, and some quite ignorant. The end of this story will touch your heart.

It tells the story of a young mermaid who ascends to the surface on her fifteenth birthday, as is the custom. She happens upon a ship in the throes of a storm, and saves the life of a prince who was about to drown. She falls in love with him, vows to find him again and to love him forever. There are, however, different rules and fates that separate mermaids from people, and the little mermaid undergoes many trials because of the choice she made.
