Today (May 25th) marks Towel Day, when fans of Douglas Adams show their respect to the dead author.
In memory of the late writer Douglas Adams, fans around the world are taking their towels to the streets.
Towel Day is a bizarre ritual which takes place on May 25th each year, two weeks after the actual memorial of
The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy author, who died aged 49 in 2001.
In a solidarity display of respect, literary hounds from Bangkok to Birmingham are encouraged to take their towel with them wherever they go, representing their love of the author's quirky persona.
Fans of Douglas Adams have already showered the internet with tribute messages.
Stephen Fry posted on the popular social networking site Twitter: "In memory of a dear friend and very great man. Today is Towel Day!"
The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy is a novelisation of a BBC radio show and although it was first published in 1979, remains a hit with readers all over the world.
Douglas Adams's hit series went on to spawn not only books, but a TV series, computer game, stage adaptation, comic book and of course a bath towel.
