13 May 2010
Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife has been crowned as Lovereading's Book of the Decade.
From a shortlist of 50, Chicago-based author Audrey Niffenegger has taken home the coveted title of Lovereading's
Book of the Decade. Her epic and emotional entry,
The Time Traveler's Wife, garnered an impressive 18.1 per cent of the vote, as decided by Lovereading's users, narrowly beating
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which came in just 0.5 per cent short of the winner.
The title has generated its author critical acclaim the world over and resulted in a subsequent blockbuster hit movie, starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.
Commenting on the top ten entries, Lovereading's Sarah Broadhurst, who painstakingly selected her top 50 books of the past ten years, which then went to the readers' vote, said: "It is interesting to note that of the ten, seven have been filmed.
"Good films though they may be, none of them can portray the full depth and strength of the novels so if you have seen the film, why not now read the book - youll glean so much more from it."
Revealing her excitement at the accolade, Niffenegger said she was "flabbergasted" to have claimed the award.
"I tend to think of The Time Traveler's Wife as my odd little book that somehow found its readers," she commented.
"It's amazing to me how many readers it has found, and how intensely they care for the book."
Since its launch in June 2005, Lovereading has attracted more than 180,000 registered users, many of whom voted in the
Books of the Decade chart, which included a host of celebrated titles such as Markus Zusak's
The Book Thief, which came in third position.
